Colbrand and Brandimart[edit]

I'm working on another article, and a potential secondary source says that "Brandimarte" is another name for Colbrand. Does anyone know of a connection? Thanks for any input.Arnold Rothstein1921 (talk) 23:42, 9 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In Henslowe’s diary there is a reference to “Brandimer” a play acted by Lord Strange's Men and in the book, British Drama 1533-1642: A Catalogue: Volume III: 1590-1597 by Martin Wiggins & Catherine Richardson (p. 1591) it is said that Brandimart is a character in Ariosto’s “Orlando Furioso” and so the play referred to in the diary may be about that character. Or instead it may be a play about Brandimore, who is a giant in Guy of Warwick’s history, who is more commonly called Colbrand. The spelling in the diary makes it hard to determine, but that is one connection according to one source, if that’s any help. I found this online here: https://books.google.com/books?id=-okeAAAAQBAJ&pg=PA114&lpg=PA114&dq=Colbrand%2BBrandimart&source=bl&ots=RzZwINZZt2&sig=bUUGpQJvrGMmgGIxBjBMAHIIi40&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi3kLvY67jLAhXKdT4KHeaXBHQQ6AEIHzAA#v=onepage&q=Colbrand%2BBrandimart&f=false Clockchime (talk) 15:42, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - that is quite helpful. The source I'm using (Malone Society Guy of Warwick play) actually refers to Martin Wiggins as its source.Arnold Rothstein1921 (talk) 03:18, 12 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
