strange controversy

[edit]

A succession of anonymous editors over the course of several months has been attempting to push the view that Cleopatra V was definitely the legitimate daughter of Ptolemy X, rather than the illegitimate daughter of Ptolemy IX. The current article explains that there's controversy over that. It's possible we should discuss the controversy differently, give different weight to different viewpoints, etc. In that case, proposals on the talk page are welcome. But just removing it and replacing it with a different assertion doesn't make any sense.

It's particularly strange because this is the kind of thing I usually expect on biographies of modern people where political issues are involved. Is there some sort of modern political issue implied by Cleopatra V's parentage? I'm at a loss to explain why an article like this would attract this kind of editing. --Delirium (talk) 08:24, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is, that there only survive very few sources about the late Ptolemaic period. Many scholars, especially leading German scholars like Werner Huss, assume that Cleopatra V was a sister or half sister of Ptolemy XII and therefore daughter of Ptolemy IX. (I have given a reference in the article), but Christopher Bennett assumes instead that she was a daughter of Ptolemy X. Because his website is serious and written in English it is of course frequently used. But he also points out that most other scholars do not agree with his opinion (see note 3 on his home page). In the ancient sources there is no definitve information to solve this question. Not even the mother of the famous Cleopatra VII is known. Oskar71 (talk) 17:37, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
