A fact from Charlie Bennett appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 15 July 2014 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that the baseball career of Charlie Bennett(pictured), who reportedly invented the chest protector, ended when both legs were run over by a train?
The third paragraph in the article states "The Detroit Tigers played their home games at Bennett Park from 1896 through the 1911 season. The Detroit Tigers did not exist until 1901. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.237.80.150 (talk) 12:00, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, they did exist in 1896. They didn't become a major league club until 1901, but they were existed as a minor league club prior to that. Cbl62 (talk) 16:21, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I removed this piece of text from the article: "In 1892, his moustache was torn off by an alligator after he fell off a riverboat on the Mississippi River." All other unsourced details in the text seemed easily verifiable. If this story were true, about a famous baseball player, I would expect it to be more easily verifiable. Suggest leaving out unless someone can reliably source it.Svaihingen (talk) 23:11, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
