Why not English name?

[edit]

I thought it was Wikipedia policy to name articles according to the Wikipedia language, i.e., English on English Wikipedia. The German name should be the redirect. --RenniePet (talk) 13:57, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't WP:ENGLISH apply here? See also Order of the Badge of Honor, for example. The translation of the name would be "Federal Cross of Merit" or, officially, "Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany" -- megA (talk) 17:16, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If we go by Google counts, as WP:ENGLISH suggests, it would still be Bundesverdienstkreuz. 84.75.172.225 (talk) 06:37, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also from WP:ENGLISH: "Google hits an are an unreliable test..." But if one does a Google search in English, the results are: "Bundesverdienstkreuz" - 9,740 hits. "Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany" - 13,100 hits. Let's redirect the German name to this article like RenniePet suggested. De728631 (talk) 23:42, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move

[edit]

Is this not moved yet?
The discussion (above) is over a year old, and there is no good reason for the article to stay at "Bundesverdienstkreuz".
Also, regarding Google hits; I got almost 3 million for "Federal Cross of Merit", so I’m going with that as the common name.
Moved, per WP:ENGLISH. Xyl 54 (talk) 03:47, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Error in order of the ribbons

[edit]

It looks like the "medal" and "cross" ribbon images are reversed. The "medal" should not contain the cross. Can someone fix this. I am not really a computer expert. I've tried numerous searchers to find a source. So much for an internet search. They all point back to Wikipedia as the source. Since the medal itself contains a version of the cross, also the medal ribbon displays this miniature medal. It may seems weird to you but I can attest that the images are completely correct. De728631 (talk) 23:34, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Federal Cross of MeritOrder of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany — Hello, I would like to suggest to move the article to "Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany". To my mind, this would be more appropriate as this is the official English version of the order's name, whereas "Federal Cross of Merit" is just a translation of the colloquial German "Bundesverdienstkreuz". It is in itself not even the name of any of the classes of the Order of Merit. --DeMonsoon (talk) 10:29, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. It is the correct translation, and furthermore, it is the official English name according to the website of the Federal President of the German Republic. I advise to change the name per WP:BOLD. If in case someone disagrees, move it back and start a requested move / inquiry per WP:RM. Diodecimus (talk) 17:42, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Refusal deleted instantly as "not notable"

[edit]

The following was deleted moments after it was added as "not notable". What are opinions on this? It can be argues that this is more notable than the most of those who accepted the honour. If, after consideration, it is deemed notable, please re-add.

In April 2021 Cardinal Reinhard Marx refused the Federal Cross of Merit, in acknowledgement of the anger of groups of victims of Catholic sexual abuse of children over what they viewed as the church's inadequate response to the claims.[1]

"Only federal decoration"

[edit]

I think some clarification is needed on this point. According to the article on Awards and decorations of the German Armed Forces, there are a number of awards issued by the German federal government. The list of those awarded by the German President includes the Order of Merit, but gives several others. That suggests that the Order of Merit is not the only federal decoration? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 13:37, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be a wrong translation. Bundespräsident: "Er ist die einzige allgemeine Verdienstauszeichnung in Deutschland und damit die höchste Anerkennung, die die Bundesrepublik für Verdienste um das Gemeinwohl ausspricht." Should be: Only general federal decoration. Grimes2 (talk) 13:47, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
