re "the changes were without warning"

there was actually a warning whenever Big John or Little John was about to change, their eyesight would go out of focus and then focus back again about 1 minute beforehand (the camera would switch to their point of view and quickly move out of focus and back again). That allowed them to quickly hide from those people who were not in on the secret.
