Is this correct?[edit]

I am not convinced this is correct. Fussell's lock on the Dorset and Somerset was a vertical boat lift. See Charles Hadfield, Canals of South West England, or Details including drawings and pictures of recent excavations. The article suggests it was an inclined plane. Hi, you are probably right. I haven't read that book, although I have visited the site (as my family lives nearby). The remaining earthworks look like large steps up the hill - which would probably suggest a series of small vertical boat lifts. Please do correct the article, especially since you've got attributable sources. I'd be hard-pressed to believe it was a single large vertical boat lift, though, based on the remains at the site. Either several small ones, or an inclined plane, would seem to fit the remaining evidence. The patent application on the linked website would match either. This page [1] suggests that several pits for vertical balance locks were dug, but only one on the back of Barrow Hill and the rest further towards the A362. Hmmm... I think the best bet is probably to attribute whatever the book says, even though it may be wrong! Adetaylor (talk) 14:35, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There were five lifts planned for the hill, and work was started on four. Bob1960evens (talk) 09:53, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
