Narrative Required
[edit]This article needs a narrative relating to the previous rivalry between the two countries within OFC and Australia's leaving of the OFC.--TinTin (talk) 05:46, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
Article validity
[edit]As a lifelong Australian resident and soccer fan since about 1999, I strongly appose this article as I've never heard of any Australia-New Zealand rivalry in soccer. The All Whites barely more significant "rivals" to the Socceroos than Tahiti, Fiji or the Soloman Islands.
(From and Australian perspective) Iran, Japan and Uruguay are the only rivals of the Socceroos I can think of (due to recent World Cup history). I'm sure most Australian fans wish the best to the All Whites in succeeding on the international soccer stage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.91.9.190 (talk) 22:00, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- Agree completely. I submit this alleged rivalry doesn't exist. The sourcing is crap. The article is really just a list of matches. Might rename it to that effect, or submit it for deletion. HiLo48 (talk) 07:03, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- It is poorly titled. --Pete (talk) 19:59, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
It's certainly regarded as a fierce rivalry on the other side of the Tasman, though since Australia joined the AFC it has reduced and largely been transferred to the Phoenix's matches - due mainly to Australia's unwillingness to play the All Whites. If you're looking for sources that such a rivalry exists, from a Kiwi point of view at least, I suggest the articles below. Given that one of them is from The Age, it's obviously regarded as a rivalry by some Australians [1], [2], [3], [4]. Note: Please read WP:PROD before prodding something. Being tagged for improvement is not an excuse for using PROD. Neither is a lack of references (unless the subject is a BLP). PROD is only for clearly uncontroversial deletions. - OK, we have one Australian writer (now unfortunately deceased) and a bunch of Kiwis writing about what New Zealanders think is a rivalry. Can one really have a one-sided rivalry? HiLo48 (talk) 02:51, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- Germans generally don't think they have much of a football rivalry with England. Their main rivalry is with the Netherlands. So the England-Germany rivalry is pretty one-sided too. And yet that definitely deserves an article. Grutness...wha? 09:08, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- If you want some more Australian sources for the existence of the rivalry though... [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], and [10]. And there are plenty more where those came from. Grutness...wha? 09:15, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- The problem with this article is not that there is no rivalry (which there is), but that it's poorly written. At the moment, it's a small article with a long list. And, as I said above, that isn't a reason for deletion - it's a reason for improving it. Grutness...wha? 09:18, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- WP:SOFIXIT I've reviewed your sources. They tend to talk of a general sports rivalry rather than one confined to football. Rugby, cricket, sure, there is a genuine rivalry. Football, not so much. Your sources are tepid on this point.

- It remains a rubbish article, and given the sort of sources supplied, it's not going to get any better. Let's face it, what sort of information are we going to give a reader coming here for information on a fierce rivalry? A list of games and some lukewarm comments from journalists? Geez. --Pete (talk) 21:46, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
