Asaba (city)

[edit]

Hello @Jamie Tubers:, how about we move the page to Asaba (city) instead. That way the common name as you said stands out. Stanleytux (talk) 22:43, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • We've had a discussion similar to this in the past; the guideline on wikipedia (WP:NCDAB) is that: when it is time to disambiguate a place, the norm is to disambiguate with the higher division where it belongs. In this case, Asaba is a city, and its higher division is a state. That is the normal way to disambiguate a city name - Oh there's even a similar scenario right on the page: there's a hatnote pointing to "Asaba, Shizuoka", a chinese town. That is the guideline. Is there a particular reason why you think this method is not sufficient in this case?--Jamie Tubers (talk) 22:58, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jamie Tubers:, you know very well that Asaba is a city and not a town, you campare it to the Japanese town, and we can't use the naming patterns for towns and counties or local government areas for cities. How many cities are named that way on Wikipedia? The common way of disambiguating cities here is by using "(city)" after city name, or simply including City as in Tai (city) and in Oklahoma City. Stanleytux (talk) 06:15, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • There's a guideline on Wikipedia, which i already cited above. Tai is an exception probably because it is not a city existing in present day...so no subdivision to disambiguate with. "Oklahoma city" is a common name, just like "Benin City". "Asaba City" is not a common name. As it stands; "Asaba, Delta" is the appropriate title, per wikipedia guideline. Want examples? 1, 2, or click on any category listing cities.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:43, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of unsourced material

[edit]

Certain editors are bent on placing the following material into this article.

  • ...lower Niger River, which divides Igboland into two unequal parts...
  • Asaba is generally known as .... the western section of Igboland...

They offer this source as a reference for the statements. Looking at the source, it is clear that the expression "Asaba is generally known as the western section of Igboland" does not appear in the source. The source does not even mention Asaba. Adding this expression therefore is an issue of original research. Furthermore, the source itself, is a primary source, and is un-vetted, meaning that the material has not gone through varying levels of rigorous third-party academic peer review, and therefore the source does not meet the requirements of WP:SCHOLARSHIP. Just fyi, I don't care if Asaba is the western section of Igboland or not. I don't care about that. What I am interested in, is having Wikipedia articles properly sourced with verifiable and reliable sources. Apart from all this, this article is about Asaba, and not about Igboland or the River Niger. Musings and observations about Igboland and River Niger should be done in their respective Wikipedia articles. If you do find a reliable source to back up the claim of "Asaba being generally known as the western section of Igboland", please feel to re-add the material with the reliable source. Thank you. 78.49.184.211 (talk) 08:44, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

– Without 'Nigeria', it doesn't look like a place. Josedimaria237 (talk) 18:34, 4 December 2021 (UTC)— Relisting. —usernamekiran • sign the guestbook(talk) 04:37, 12 December 2021 (UTC)— Relisting. Danski454 (talk) 00:19, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@: Asaba, Nigeria should be the correct name. Josedimaria237 (talk) 16:58, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Crouch, Swale The proposal says 'Asaba, Nigeria' not 'Asaba, Delta State'.

Josedimaria237 (talk) 23:52, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That's because you've changed it, my opposition is to the original suggestion to Asaba, Delta State. Crouch, Swale (talk) 07:01, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I changed it because that's a better name.
