Archie really banging Mr. Waldo Weatherbee?

live-action television series

Has anyone heard about the on-again, off-again live-action television series, where it stands, whether it will ever be produced.

Archie Comics creators

Shouldn't something be mentioned about Dan DeCarlo? Afaik, he created Archie's modern look...

You're right that something should be mentioned about him. Toonmon2005 23:41, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
There should be a whole section in this article on the Archie Comics creators, in fact. Stan Goldberg is another one I can think of. Kaijan 23:21, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
It should be probably be written into the main article, not it's own "creator" section, but I've started adding information about DeCarlo. Chris Stangl 01:42, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Why does this article list John Goldwater and Vic Bloom (with Bob Montana just as the artist) as the creators of the characters when Archie Andrews (comics) and Bob_Montana list only Bob Montana as the sole creator? I have read elsewhere that Montana based the characters on people he knew as a teenager, yet this article states that Goldwater based them on people he (Goldwater) met in the midwest. Please either clarify or list the controversy. --Ericinwisconsin (talk) 00:16, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

House Style

Shouldn't there be a section about Archie's house style? Toonmon2005 23:41, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Fawcett-Archie

I've noticed some Archie comics have a small box that says "Fawcett" on the cover. Does anyone know anything about a relationship between Fawcett Comics and Archie Comics? ike9898 01:27, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

could be they distributed them?? --Emb021 19:16, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
You're right. Fawcett distributed Archie comics and digest magazines for years. And yes, they're the same Fawcett that originally created Captain Marvel. --Ericinwisconsin (talk) 00:03, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Superheroes

Not sure who took it upon themselves to remove the section on the superheroes published by Archie Comics over the years, but I have restored it. --Emb021 19:16, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Funny, there's an entire stub about how Archie meets The Punisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Punisher_Meets_Archie), but no mention in this section of the article. Or is the punisher not considered a superhero? I dunno.

I was about to mention that - The Punisher isn't a superhero, but an anti-hero, since he goes about killing criminals instead of putting them in jail. This should either be merged into Archie Comics, or the Alternate Universe page. Kitsune Sniper / David Silva 22:06, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
considering that the Punisher is a Marvel character I would say it would need to be an Alternate Universe.--Invisifan 15:09, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

POV and Movie

"The Hangman (the Comet's younger brother) might be the most brutal superhero of the 1940s." This is a pretty subjective sentence and there is no qualification for it. It needs to be rewritten.

In addition, why is there no mention of the movie "Archie, to Riverdale and Back Again"? [1]

The Hangman passage is subjective as it stands, but it's an interesting "fact" if it has any historical truth, and it would be great if someone could cite a reference or authority instead of having to remove it. ... As for Riverdale and Back, add as ye see fit. Chris Stangl 18:21, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
The Hangman (like the Punisher & very earlier Batman) was all about retribution in an age before there was a Comics Code Authority & no one thought twice about violence in comics ... during one of the Archie superhero revival attempts he was brought back as a fairly rabid villain (without much change from his original appearances apparently). There were a LOT or brutal heroes in the 40's though, and even the early versions of modern mainstream heroes not infrequently killed their villains directly or through (deliberate) inaction.--Invisifan 15:10, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
According to Toonopedia, early MLJ "superheroes" like Hangman and Madam Satan indeed seem to be quite brutal. 惑乱 分からん 18:42, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Can we get a citation on this paragraph? I'd feel more comfortable with its encyclopedic value if we had one. --Crossmr 15:59, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

confirm or correct (Kilyle)

"The other parents appear less frequently" -- not exactly ... while Hiram Lodge appears frequently, Archie's own parents are not that far behind; by contrast (despite having her own wikipedia article) Hermione Lodge appears no more frequently than Betty's parents (Hal & Alice) or Jughead's (Forsythe Pendleton Jr and Gladys) — although they all appear far more than Reggie's father (Ricky) and his never-seen-and-unnamed mother. It could be noted also that Hermione's appearance varies greatly (sometimes within the same story!!) between slim, glamorous socialite and stodgy (and slightly overweight) matron.

As for Betty's siblings, she has (although the Archie universe being what it is there are stories implying otherwise) an older brother (Chic) and and older sister (Polly), both introduced in "Little Archie". Chic is almost never seen or mentioned in the mainstream stories (although once apparently as a spy!!), however Polly is not infrequently referred to by Betty in a sibling rivalry context and does occasionally appear in stories (she's a red-head — like Archie, not Cheryl).

Harry & Saranda would be better placed under "Townsfolk" as neither are students or even teens. As for Freddy Fogarty & Ambrose Pipps, I'm not sure they warrant a separate and redundant reference here -- possibly Minor characters in Archie Comics should be referenced as a "see also" instead? --Invisifan

Yeah, I'm aware that Archie's parents appear much more frequently than any of the other normal-income parents and more than Veronica's mother. I didn't move her mother because I thought the two parents should be together. And although I have a sizeable collection, I haven't been buying much lately. I had no idea on Harry and Saranda--have never heard of them, but as they were noted to be dating the main characters I thought they belonged there. Guess not--go ahead and shift them where they should be.

I'm reasonably sure that I heard Betty's sister mentioned in the regular comic...I think I recall her actually appearing on one occasion, but it was a long time ago, my reading that. Anyway, that's why I put her up. Are there any other family members that should go up? I know canon is an issue, but I would expect that a sibling mentioned once is good enough to note. Doesn't Archie have an older brother Chad? or am I completely thinking of something else? On extended family, might be a judgment call (such as if an "uncle" is used merely for comedic effect).

As to Little Archie vs. Archie--I would expect that Little Archie would be background facts for the regular series (in as much as you can call anything a "fact" in Archie). I don't consider it the same as the other "alternate universes." Unlike the futuristic series, it's established fact, not speculation; unlike the spies or time traveling, it's told in a generally factual manner (aside from the supernatural bits such as aliens, which crop up in regular Archie too anyway (especially at Christmas)). Still, regarding Ambrose and Fangs, if you guys think that frequent appearances in Little Archie and only one appearance in Archie means a minor character, go ahead and remove 'em, I guess.Kilyle 08:01, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

As far as ranking the frequency of parental appearances, informally I'd say:
  1. Hiram Lodge (easily)
  2. the Andrews
  3. the Coopers
  4. the Jones
  5. Hermione Lodge
  6. Rick Mantle
  7. anyone else (essentially never)
if the "The other parents appear less frequently" is removed altogether it would make more sense, otherwise it needs rearranging.
Polly Cooper isn't frequent, but she did appear in the digest on the srands last month (as an example) and gets mentions now & then (unlike big brother Chic, who like Ambrose & Fangs is primarily only in Little Archie -- btw, "Chic" is Archie's own nickname from his very first appearance) ... As for other family members it's pretty well established that of the core 5 only Betty & Jughead have siblings; Veronica does have a cousin Leroy (about 10) who appears whenever a younger relative would make life difficult for Archie; Jughead does have a few notable relatives (Saranda Jones is a cousin of some sort on his father's side) — his mother has a sister (Wilma Wilkin) and brother (Herman) who live in Midville and are part of a different Archie Comics series...

fanfiction.net

Does anyone know anything about the cease and desist letter Archie Comics sent to fanfiction.net? 199.126.166.13 03:41, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

the only cease and desist letter from archie comics i could find in the internet is from http://www.tcj.com/journalista/zarch200304B.html regarding about Archie's character is depicted as gay from a play, not for FF.net. but this is interesting news. i'm gonna look it up. HoneyBee 05:29, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
well, edited - apparently there is already an article about it in FanFiction.Net article. Scroll down to "Honoring author requests". FF.net is banned of using Archie comics storylines. hmm...HoneyBee 05:36, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Faculty Funnies

I couldn't find it in this article, but wasn't there a short series about the teachers at Riverdale High getting super powers? I believe it was called "Faculty Funnies". If there was, why isn't it in the article? --Canadian Joeldude 22:09, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

you can add the article about it if you want to. personally, i never heard about "faculty funnies". my knowledge about archie comics is limited. don't forget to put the source(s) :) HoneyBee 23:11, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

FACULTY FUNNIES #1 was released in June of 1989, in which the faculty of Riverdale High are indeed imbued with superpowers. Professor Flutesnoot invites the other faculty members to an advance viewing of the science fair projects - Archie's entry explodes, giving the faculty superpowers. Ms. Grundy gains the ability to stretch her right arm as if it were rubber. Coach Clayton gains "super lung" abilities. Mr. Weatherbee is given "trouble-sense" alerting him to nearby danger. Professor Flutesnoot is given the ability to withstand electrical shock. The series was named "Faculty Funnies presents THE AWESOME FOURSOME." These powers lasted through issue #5, the last issue in the Faculty Funnies comicbook series. I can't quite remember whether this is true or not, but I think it's possible that some of the cartoons in the regular Archie digests that revolved mainly around the faculty of Riverdale High were also called Faculty Funnies. 71.56.86.252 12:18, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

What grade are they in?

There is currently no speculation as to what grade Archie and his friends are in. Numerous proms naturally suggest 11th or 12th grade, but can anyone uncover specific stories that might point to earlier grades, or contradict being in 11th or 12th? Funny they never talk about graduation day, so is it possible they are all in 11th? This should be documented under the "Inconsistent themes" section, assuming there are any.--Metron4 23:19, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Grade 10 or 11 - they are officially (perennially) 16-17 which puts them in that general area, and they never appear as either freshmen or seniors ...--Invisifan 01:47, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Should it be brought up that Archie & the gang appear to consistently be the oldest-looking students in the school? I never see kids larger or older-looking than them, or talk of a 'senior class' or students soon to be graduating. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jabroniville (talkcontribs) 20:51, 15 May 2007 (UTC).

Number of classroom stories divided by school days = ?

Anyone know of an attempt to calculate the number of times Archie or his friends have appeared in classroom stories and tried to compare that to the number of possible school days in the average four-year high school? Very roughly put, nine school months, times thirty days, minus three vacation weeks (two for Xmas, one for Easter), minus four or five holidays, all multiplied by four school years equals, wow, about one thousand possible school days.

One thousand school days with six classes per day = 6,000 possible classes

Now here's where it gets tricky. Lets say Archie Comics has published at least five Archie comic books every month and has since December 1941. Lets say January 1942.

2006-1942 = 64 years of Archie.

64 years X 5 books X 12 issues a year = 3,840 issues for five titles.

Each comic has two to three stories average. If just one of those three is set in a classroom, that's 3,840 classes. According to my horrible, horrible calculations, Archie still has a ways to go before he graduates. This assumes that the stories we read are from all four years of high school. Anyone else want a go at this, just for fun?--Metron4 23:46, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

You made one critical mistake calculating the number of school days - weekends... Let's try this - 52 weeks a year, minus about 11 for summer, 2 for Christmas, 1 for March break/Easter and another for miscellaneous individual holidays == 37, times 5 days per week is: 185 days in school x 4 == 740 times 6 classes = 2940 (so say 3000) ... only about HALF your estimate... and since we never see them specifically as freshmen or seniors we lose at least some of that at the beginning & end so I'd say it's closer to 2500 classes available for stories.--Invisifan 01:49, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

copy-edit

Have removed the following from the article as it does not make sense. If someone knows what it was trying to say, perhaps you can insert it back into the Inconsistent themes and character portrayals section:

  • (edit: he is part of the gang, only he is the "dity Uncle Harry," the one who does the mean things but is still part of the group, anyway).

I have read the entire article and it doesn't need copy-editing: grammar, spelling etc is fine. However the content is kind of waffly and not organised particularly well so if it is still an issue, you might want to consider inserting the {{cleanup}} tag. JenLouise 02:31, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

reprint edits

Is it true on reprint digests they edit the dialogue and even the art work (like adding an undershirt to Betty). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sdphost (talkcontribs) 16:11, 6 March 2007 (UTC).

They do sometimes edit the dialog to make it more current. I have seen discussions about adding an undershirt to Betty, but I don't think anyone has actually confirmed this yet. Oldiesmann 22:55, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Don DeCarlo

Does anyone have anything about the bad blood that was left when Don DeCarlo left Archie shortly before his death. There was some controversy about the creators rights on Josie and the Pussy Cats when that movie was made. I know it was quite bad. I think there was something in the CBG and in the forward for a book of his pin-up girls. Not sure about either of those, I can't quite remember where I read this. History of Racism?

I don't know of any of them are racist or not. but i was just reading an archie comic, the particular comic is one where betty is explaining to archie what will happen if he stays with veronica, and it shows a sequence with him ordering her around. When he goes to a freezer to get veronica something, in the freezer are foods you would normally find (frozen pizza, meat pie, etc) and then there is one, rightbelow meat pie, named Frozen Jew. Found it in Archie Digest Magazine, No. 150, comic "Like it Is". Anyway i was wondering if this was some srot of a joke or some kind of racists thing? Surely it was put there for a reason. - Thero (68.205.70.254 00:18, 1 June 2007)

This comic cover is circulating the Internet: http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/cartoons/archie.htm many people interpret this as racist. I understand why but, that isn't the intention. Mr. Weatherbee is always yelling, angry etc. in the comics (crabby or, a crab) so Archie says "we serve anybody" (meaning mean people like Mr. Weatherbee) when Mr Weatherbee was actually referring to the food. Archie pointing at Chuck is just coincidental because he can't point anywhere else, there's so much stuff in the booth. ArbyBee 02:27, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Missing Character

I dunno if he's notable enough to be listed as a character, but I know there was a military guy as a vice principal in some issues. Isnt it Howitzer or something?

Chester Cool & Lester Square

Does anyone remember these two characters? I remember being particularly fascinated by Lester Square because he had a square head. It was also long before I was old enough to realise the pun on "Leceister Square" that, curiously, probably only British people would have got at the time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Atanovic (talkcontribs) 12:20, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

The Archies in Jugman

I was searching for Archies on youtube (I got bored and decided why not, to figure out if they matched what I thought they should sound like) and I found a full-length movie. But the thing is, it's not listed here. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/archies_in_jugman/ It's a cartoon, and it's the best one I've seen. Total PoV but... yeah. I searched and it's no where? -Babylon pride (talk) 00:50, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

List of characters

The list of characters on this page is getting a bit long, and a lot of them are minor characters. I know it's hard to define which characters are part of the main cast, so I think it should be limited to the ones that are actually listed at http://www.archiecomics.com/whoswho/riverdale/whos-who-riverdale.htm (Jughead's sister shares Hot Dog's page there). Cheryl Blossom is listed under the spin-offs on this page, and other characters should just be limited to Minor characters in Archie Comics.

GA Fail

Unfortunately, this article does not meet the criteria for Good Article status at this time. According to the quick-fail criteria, the presence of a cleanup banner requires the reviewer to fail the article. This article has two cleanup banners. In addition, I agree with the banner that claims that the article is made up of original research. The "Inconsistent themes and character portrayals" and "Common Themes in Archie Comics" sections are completely unreferenced. I recommend addressing the problems brought up by the banners, sourcing the article thoroughly, and copyediting carefully before renominating the article. Best wishes, GaryColemanFan (talk) 05:48, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

REVISION OF PAGES - Archie Superheroes

Head above parapet time. I have access to pretty well all of MLJ/Red Circle/Archie publications, and the associated DC cross-over stuff and I'm slowly developing a strategy for updating the superhero side of Archie as my next project, together with updated hero histories. The current Wikipedia pages and links don't deal with the subject properly for anyone looking at the subject even on a cursory basis (many potential title and character links don't even exist) - and it's a long, complex history which even fanzines haven't generally covered very well over the years. Seeing as DC Comics are now committed to a new revitalisation of the characters, I think its time the info was there.
I'm happy to slash and burn through what's there (barring distractions from classic Winter Olympics) but bearing in mind the history and the complexity of linkage etceteras we should all be able to present a concise back-history to be proud of - this could be the opportunity to restructure the whole edifice. I'll wait 7 days then start work on my own if necessary.
Anyone is welcome to drop into my home page after 21-02-2010 for a look at the basic structure and tasklist I'm proposing (it'll be a bit unstructured before then). Comments there will be most welcome, althoug I'll pick up anything here also.Archiveangel (talk) 17:46, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Goodman Beaver paragraph

I've restored the edit, for the following reasons. The restored version includes an incorrect date (1960/61), an unreadable bit of gibberish ("nnbn"), several instances of clunky writing (e.g. "Kurtzman" twice in once sentence; magazine "itself"; "met with threatened"; a purposeless "however"; the incorrect use of "ironically"), some non-Wikipedian language ("Archie had forgotten to renew" is unsourced POV, as is "legal action is likely not possible"; "some 40 or so years later" is poor phrasing when a precise date exists). The paragraph ends with the false inference ("in the case of Starchie...") that the two stories had separate standards of legal protection. I've also added a useful description of the parody's content which indicates why Archie Comics reacted negatively.208.120.7.206 (talk) 16:56, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
