I am adding that the USS Albany is named after Albany, NY to remove any doubt that people may have as to where/who those battleships are named after. I would be curious to know if there is information on whether or not all the other Albany's in the US are named after either Albany, NY or Albany, Georgia (those being the two oldest).
- Albany also refers to Scotland - more specifically the region of scotland from the Firth of Forth northwards. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation_(university)#Scotland. Therefore should it have its own article? 78.147.40.197 (talk) 10:59, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
Using information just from the wikipedia articles themselves I have added next to each listing in this disamb. page whether it is named after another city and when if so when it adopted the name "Albany". So far most in the United States are named for Albany, New York including Albany, Georgia. Only exception so far is Albany, Texas which is named for the one in Georgia. Also the Albany in South Africa is named for Albany, New York which I found strange.Camelbinky (talk) 12:43, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Add a "often refers to" section at top?
[edit]I noticed that unlike dab pages for many other city names, this list doesn't include an "often refers to" section at the top to aid readers in finding the most searched for items. See Salem, Portland and Richmond for examples. It seems that of all the articles on this dab page, Albany, New York, Albany, Georgia and Albany, Western Australia have much larger traffic statistics: 38,000 for Albany, NY, 10,500 for Albany, GA and 7,000 for Albany, Western Australia. Would anyone be opposed to moving these three cities to the top of the list? Per MOS:DABORDER, lists with multiple common meanings may have these meanings listed prominently at the top of the page. Pronounciation
[edit]From what I've heard, the residents of different Albanys pronounce it differently, such as:
• "Rhymes with Smallbany" NY,
• al-BANy, GA,
• Various "Betty, you can call me Al"-banys
Is this worth discussion?
Order
[edit]I'm not sure that there is a primary topic here, but it seems pretty likely that a large majority of readers are here looking for Albany, New York. Any concerns with me making some adjustments so that the highly viewed topics can be easier to find?--Yaksar (let's chat) 15:19, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Yaksar: MOS:DABORDER does allow for "In cases where a small number of main topics are significantly more likely to be the reader's target, several of the most common meanings may be placed at the top" so that seems fine to me. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 15:31, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks User:Shhhnotsoloud. I took a go at shuffling, but I don't think it was the most elegant way. If others have better ideas for how to make the page order more helpful for reader navigation based on likely search targets, please do so!--Yaksar (let's chat) 16:01, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Actually, I changed the approach to be more in line with what you quoted. Went by pages getting more than 1000 views/day on average, which was somewhat arbitrary but seems fair.--Yaksar (let's chat) 16:08, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
