Main namespace redirects to wikipedia namespace[edit]

from Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Main namespace redirects to wikipedia namespace:

Hi, we have the style-guide Wikipedia:Avoid self-references to keep the Wikipedia namespace separate from the encyclopedia one. However consider redirects such as AfD which redirect the user automatically to the Wikipedia namepace. Rather than a redirect should they be a link on the page using the {{selfref}} template, e.g.:

{{selfref|In Wikipedia, AfD may refer to [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion]]}}, displayed as:

? Thanks/wangi 14:15, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In that case, I'll be bold and edit AfD to test the water... Thanks/wangi 17:33, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say the redirect should be kept, atleast until the need arise for a disambiguation page. Scoo 19:32, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm sorry to see this changed, since AfD was my preferred shortcut for Wikipedia:Articles for Deletion. It actually seems unlikely that the capitalization "AfD" is used by any of the items at AFD. If I'm among the only people using it that way, though, I'll bite the bullet in the interests of following the style guidelines... Brighterorange 21:51, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • What's wrong with using WP:AFD?wangi 13:06, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • There's nothing wrong with it other than it being twice the length. Brighterorange 14:32, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have a dream[edit]

that one day I will be able to type in "AfD" and get to Articles for deletion without seeing a dab for "All Free Dictionarys" (which should be AFD or afd, MAYBE, certainly not AfD). Even if selfrefs are discouraged, 99.9999999999999% of users who type in AfD want the same thing, the Articles for deletion page. Can you give it to them? I think so. Do the right thing. savidan(talk) (e@) 01:09, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Current redirect seems sensible, if users were to search for/type afd (-> Afd) then they'll end up at the disambiguation page. IMHO AfD is quite specific, should not confuse people. Just a thought, Scoo 19:33, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The redirect was axed by Cyde, Block log: "19:29, 5 May 2006 Cyde deleted "AfD" (No cross-namespace redirects.)". Bummer.. Scoo 19:55, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Get over it, this is a encylopedia - that's what's important here, not the processes behind it. Is WP:AFD so hard? Plus there's a link on the AFD page too... /wangi 20:44, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I much prefered being able to type AfD too. Perhaps someone should just be wiki:bold and change it back! Jcuk 21:17, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but the integrity of the encyclopedia wins out over the convenience of not having to type WP:. Cross-namespace redirects are disallowed primarily because they blur the line between encyclopedic content and the process that goes into making said content, and they break on mirrors. Remember, you're not just writing for Wikipedia, you're writing for everyone who uses our GFDL'd content. --Cyde Weys 22:46, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Suppose you fellows/gals are right, but might I suggest that AfD would redirect to AFD? (rather than a locked page) Scoo 08:28, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I always typed in AfD. Cyde, this also is not the only cross-space link (see template). BlueGoose 20:58, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's protected by the {{selfref}} template, very different/wangi 22:00, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's wrong with:

#Redirect {{selfref|[[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion]]}}
