Macropterygius

[edit]

The type species of Macropterygius von Huene 1922 is Ichthyosaurus trigonus Owen 1840 (specified by von Huene, 1923), and the holotype of I. trigonus is ANSP 10124 (Spamer et. al. 1989). The holotype of I. trigonus was mistakenly thought to be lost and vertebrae figured by Phillips (1871) were designated the neotype by Lydekker (1889), (Spamer et. al. 1989). However, the rediscovery of the holotype prompted the ICZN to revoke Lydekker's (1889) neotype designation (Spamer 1991; ICZN 1993).
