Merging this with REM sleep may be a mistake, as there is evidence that they are not the same thing. The current research goes both ways, some suggest that the are similar, while others say it is an entirely different state, which represents aspects of the developing CNS which are not present in a mature brain...and that certain aspects of REM are not present in Active Sleep due to the immaturity of the CNS in the neonate. I'll add this information when I have time.

This article should be merged with sleep. Active sleep is only a small part of a larget topic as shown by the paucity of information on this page. Fewer stubs are better.
