September 24: Independence Day in Guinea-Bissau (1973)
- 1664 - In the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Netherlands surrendered to England a fortified settlement in the New Netherland colony known as New Amsterdam, which would eventually become New York City.
- 1841 - Sultan of Brunei granted Sarawak to British adventurer James Brooke, who subsequently became the Rajah.
- 1869 - "Black Friday": Gold prices plummeted as a group of speculators, headed by Jay Gould and James Fisk, plotted but failed to control the market.
- 1948 - Soichiro Honda founded the Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and began manufacturing motorcycles.
