Template editor

User:Sundostund

Hello. I respectfully request to be given this access level, primarily because of my periodical work on templates belonging to Category:Country data templates by type of entity. I simply don't want to bother others with template-protected edit requests. Furthermore, if my request is granted, I certainly wouldn't misuse this new right in any way – in the same way as I never misused the right of file mover, which I have for almost 10 years now (while contributing to Wikipedia for almost 14 years). — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 15:17, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sundostund question - when editing TPROT'd WP:HRT's, would you need to change the way you edit templates today? If so, how? — xaosflux Talk 15:28, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: I would say that, when editing HRT's, one needs to be extra careful in order to avoid any disruption in their functionality and appearance. I am already behaving in that way with regular, unprotected templates that I can edit at this point. Also, especially in the beginning, I would refrain from any radical/substantial edits on HRT's. So, my work would be limited to less far-reaching edits at certain Country data templates. — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 18:08, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sundostund I'm a bit concerned about editing practices such as this recent series of changes. Would you have treated that template different if it was an HRT? — xaosflux Talk 19:07, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: Please, clarify why exactly you are concerned about it. Obviously, I understand that I've done a certain number of edits in a short span of time on that template, until I was satisfied with the final version. Naturally, if that template was a highly-sensitive HRT I would treat it differently – I would try to finish the work on it with much less number of edits, maybe two or three at most. And of course, I wouldn't change the appearance of an HRT in any radical way. But, as you can see, I also didn't do that with the Dominican template – my changes and their final version didn't alter its appearance in some substantial way. — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 20:28, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Say we have a template that has tens of thousands or more transclusions - each edit causes a massive joblog job to need to rebuild pages and caches; making 12 edits instead of 1 causes that to happen over and over again. For low use templates, iterative edits are no big deal - but otherwise sandboxes exist for a good reason. — xaosflux Talk 20:33, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(Non-administrator comment) Xaosflux is concerned with why are you making many edits, as you say until I was satisfied with the final version, in these instances those edits should have been made in the template's sandbox until you're satisfied with the results, then make one edit to the live template. I wonder why myself. - FlightTime (open channel) 20:39, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: That's exactly what I assumed in my reply above. I would certainly limit my number of edits on HRT templates with a high number of transclusions, and I would try to get the job done with as less number of edits as possible.
@FlightTime: It wasn't my intention to have so many edits on that template at all, and I thought that I would finish the work on it with just a few edits. Obviously, if it was a HRT template, I would either use the sandbox or perform just a couple of edits to the live template.

I think the correct answer to this question is that for high-risk templates, you need to /sandbox your changes, and then deploy them in one diff instead of 12. This is due to server load issues, and due to the risk of an accidental breakage even for a minute being seen by a lot of readers. Template:High-use talks about this a bit more:
To avoid major disruption and server load, any changes should be tested in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage.
Anyway, it sounds like you don't know about template sandboxing, which is not a good sign and may be a reason to decline this request as a little premature. –Novem Linguae (talk) 20:56, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Novem Linguae: I am aware how sensitive HRT templates are, and I certainly wouldn't perform like a dozen of edits on such a template. Of course that I would use a sandbox. Its just that, up to this point, I didn't work on templates that absolutely require use of sandbox, if the intended changes couldn't be performed in just a couple of edits. — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 21:04, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest a 3 or 6 month trial to give Sundostund a chance to prove their abilities, and also to ensure that good practices are followed — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:52, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with MSGJ - FlightTime (open channel) 23:12, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ: Thank you for your suggestion! I can promise you that I would live up to the trust placed in me, and that I wouldn't misuse this access level in any way, if given the chance to handle it. After 3–6 months, it would be obvious that I understand what kind of responsibility it is, and that I deserve this right permanently; after all, my almost 14-year record and my work here proves that I am capable of that. And, as I said in my request – I need the right of template editor in order to perform periodical work at Category:Country data templates by type of entity, instead of bothering others to do that for me, via template-protected edit requests. I emphasize the word periodical, as I have no intention to jump into some frenzied work on protected templates; my edits there would occur only at times, and would be rather limited in their scope, especially in the beginning. — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 01:52, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done for three months. Primefac (talk) 08:33, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the timing, last weeks kept me very busy irl. Re-applying for template editor rights, which I was granted on a temporary basis by Primefac (permalink). You can find a quasi-complete list of the protected edits I requested, performed or declined at User:Est. 2021/contribs#Edit requests. Thanks. What's there looks good, but there are not many template related edits to help assess your performance. I suggest a temporary extension of the user right — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 23:06, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
