History section draft

It's about time to work on this section. Here's what it should contain:

  • General introduction
  • Release of Metroid, first game to reward fast completion
  • Release of Doom, first speedrunning community
  • Release of Quake
  • 1998: SDA formed
  • 2003: Metroid2002 formed
  • November 2003: Metroid2002 and SDA merge
  • November 2003: Morimoto releases SMB3 TAS
  • March 2nd, 2004: SDA begins offering all kinds of speedruns
  • 2003, December: Bisqwit starts TASVideos - Source: http://tasvideos.org/SiteHistory.html
I don't know when this section was added to the talk page (it's unsigned), but I softly included Metroid in the "Earliest examples" section which I added today. However, it's complicated...the original NES Metroid does not seem to feature an in-game timer, so I used Metroid II as the example. (also, Metroid II was included in the sources I linked) But to further complicate matters, Nintendo Power did accept times for the original NES Metroid. (perhaps via the honor system? not sure) In any case, Metroid wasn't the start of speedrunning, as any game with an in-game timer could have times widely distributed via newsletters and magazines. -- sarysa (talk) 13:18, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am a speedrunner and I think the difference between RTA Speedruns (real-time-attack Speedruns) and TAS (Tool-assisted Speedruns) should be clarified at the beginning of the article. Any reader should know the fundamental difference between human gameplay and Tool-assisted. Both RTA and TAS are the same in nature "completing a game as fast as possible" but they're different in execution, one is a human doing the gameplay on real time which requieres their skill and decision making while the other is a pre-programmed computed doing everything with a series on instructions. 2806:1016:D:9778:F8F0:B572:EC56:46AC (talk) 10:08, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What specifically needs to be changed about the lead? It looks fine to me in that regard. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ (talk) 12:27, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 23 September 2022

SpeedrunSpeedrunning – Requesting to move to gerund form of the verb "speedrun". "Speedrunning" is generally how the activity is referred to, and always struck me as weird that the article's title was "Speedrun" as a noun, as in the product of the action. Looking to Running, Racing, Swimming (the example given at WP:GERUND), etc. as precedent for this. Reliable sources extensively identify it as "Speedrunning" and I think that most people looking up information about the hobby in general will use that term. I don't really expect this to be controversial unless there's past discussion or precedent against this move that I'm unaware of.
