Sockpuppet
Regarding Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Elliotthomaspotts/Archive, they have another IP, which has vandalised past final warning too. 2.31.78.90 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) – DarkGlow (✉) 21:03, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- DarkGlow, I think you're right, and that IP is on the same range as one I blocked before. Blocked them and another IP they seemed to be using. GeneralNotability (talk) 20:03, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. Do you think it would be relevant to perhaps add this to WP:LTA? – DarkGlow (✉) 20:05, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- DarkGlow, don't think so - a few block evasions isn't enough to earn a place there in my opinion. GeneralNotability (talk) 20:07, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Another of their IPs here: 2.24.14.73 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) – DarkGlow (✉) 13:05, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- DarkGlow, blocked, thanks. Wish I could rangeblock but this is a huge range and there would be a lot of collateral damage. GeneralNotability (talk) 15:36, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- That's a shame. I don't know much about IPs – how many users would be affected by a rangeblock? – DarkGlow (✉) 15:48, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- DarkGlow, the network they're editing from contains 65,536 IPs and they could potentially be assigned any of those, plus they've previously been on a different network with the same number of IPs. I can't tell you how many people are actually on that range, but for ranges that big we usually won't block unless we're dealing with a really bad vandal or LTA. Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 18
News and updates associated with user scripts from the past three months (September, October, and November 2020).
Hello everyone and welcome to the 18th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:
Scripts Submit your new/improved script here
|
|
- Twinkle has made a number of improvements, including using a change tag to identify actions made with it and automatically filing edit requests for protected XfD nominations.
- SD0001's shortdescs-in-category is now compatible with scripts modifying category listings, such as Equazcion's CatListMainTalkLinks
- GhostInTheMachine's TalkHelper2 is a newer version of their prior script, TalkHelper
- GeneralNotability's spihelper updated to 2.2.10, fixing a number of small bugs, automatically tagging globally locked socks as such in the sockpuppet template, and restoring open cases following an SPI history merge.
- Enterprisey's script-installer gadget has been updated with more internationalization of messages, as well as addition of a user preference,
window.scriptInstallerInstallTarget
to allow controlling where new scripts are to be installed.
- Enterprisey is looking for beta testers for their new section-watchlist user script. See the announcement.
- The second edition of the m:Coolest Tool Award will be taking place in December.
- Enterprisey's links-in-logs script has now been implemented as part of MediaWiki core, see gerrit:640761 and phab:T207562.
My apologies for the delayed issue. As always, if anyone else would like to contribute, help is appreciated. Stay safe, --DannyS712 (talk) 18:20, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
Gary Ridgway
Hi, and thanks for your help on Gary Ridgway. However, I noticed that the protection you put in place is significantly shorter than the previous protection, which expired only a couple days ago. Would you please take a look at the page's protection history and consider making the semi-protection longer? The page has been a vandalism target for a long time. Thanks. Dunley (talk) 18:52, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Second that request. The IPs belong to LTA CalebHughes and he'll just keep going for lack of something else to do with his life. Favonian (talk) 19:00, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
- Dunley, Favonian, done - wasn't aware this was an LTA so I was just trying to stop the immediate damage. Protected for three months. GeneralNotability (talk) 19:04, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
- GeneralNotability The three month protection you put in is still significantly shorter than the one year protection that expired only a couple days ago. Are you absolutely sure you don't want to go longer? Dunley (talk) 19:28, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
- Facepalm I saw El C's block and was like "why did they do a <1 day block from Dec 2 to later on Dec 2?" Nope, that was a year block. Reading is hard, okay? Amended. GeneralNotability (talk) 19:30, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

MarquinhosWikipediano
It looks like they are using a proxy to editing the page .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/MarquinhosWikipediano/Archive#21_November_2020 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Soviet_war_crimes&diff=989942043&oldid=989936206 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Soviet_war_crimes&diff=992662261&oldid=992277578 looks like the page needs protection.2601:81:C400:DC30:C0BF:DCE:5AAE:ECC6 (talk) 14:50, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
They are adding the same material that was deleted by another admin that they put https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Soviet_war_crimes&diff=990060344&oldid=989995557 and they admit to being MarquinhosWikipediano just like they did on the ip talk page https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Soviet_war_crimes&diff=991022492&oldid=990892804 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:187.39.129.78#block.2601:81:C400:DC30:C0BF:DCE:5AAE:ECC6 (talk) 14:58, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, looks like them. I've blocked. GeneralNotability (talk) 19:15, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
A barnstar for you!

Thank you for giving me a second chance. I know a lot of admins that wouldn't have done that, and I am very grateful that you gave me one. I will stick to my promises and never sock again. Thanks again. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 17:44, 6 December 2020 (UTC) |

Recent changes
- You can now put pages on your watchlist for a limited period of time. Some wikis already had this function. [1][2]
Changes later this week
- Information from Wikidata that is used on a wiki page can be shown in recent changes and watchlists on a Wikimedia wiki. To see this you need to turn on showing Wikidata edits in your watchlist in the preferences. Changes to the Wikidata description in the language of a Wikimedia wiki will then be shown in recent changes and watchlists. This will not show edits to languages that are not relevant to your wiki. [3][4]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all wikis from 10 December (calendar).
Future changes
- You can vote on proposals in the Community Wishlist Survey between 8 December and 21 December. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on.

About that film we discussed on IRC
After further investigating, I have come to the conclusion that the text may actually be a copyright violation. I copied and pasted the text into Google, and searches from 2010 came up. Dutchy85 did not add the text until 2012. I am well aware that these search results do not necessarily mean that the text was copied, but I do think it can be a good indicator. Sorry if I'm wasting your time. Again, the film is The Duel at Silver Creek. Scorpions13256 (talk) 19:53, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- Scorpions13256, if you do think it's a copyvio, go ahead and use the {{copyvio-revdel}} template (User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel is a great tool for generating the template). I just wanted to make sure that you'd considered the possibility that it was a reverse copyvio since the source looked a little iffy. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:32, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for recommending that script. I did not know it existed. I guess I no longer have to use IRC. I'll wait for someone to delete the revision. Scorpions13256 (talk) 01:16, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
Trueman31
Hello. I recently saw a investigation of sock puppetry regards to that specific user. And I was put under suspicion. I am telling you and I felt like that I Just need to say I am 100% not trueman31. I would never vandalise the Wikipedia ever. Especially not after the last times. The edits I reverted was the ones that Trueman31 vandalised. I know that case closed but I’m just letting you know I’m not trueman31 or any sock puppet of him. Thanks WikiFlame50 (talk) 22:04, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
New Page Patrol December Newsletter
Hello GeneralNotability,
- Year in review
It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

- Reviewer of the Year
John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.
- NPP Technical Achievement Award
As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

See this, which itself links to my talk page and another deletion forum. Not sure what this editor is up to, keeps being told it's irredeemable spam Jimfbleak - talk to me? 11:51, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- Jimfbleak, thanks, I'll keep an eye on this...for someone with 100k+ edits they seem distressingly unfamiliar with some basic policies. GeneralNotability (talk) 13:53, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
SPI follow-up: KevinPR82
This is follow up to SPI case you closed. I would have taken this to User:Ad Orientem, but that editor retired. Because there were other issues (what to do with standing cases when an admin retires, plus long-term edit warring, disruptive unsourced editing, and WP:IDHT), I tried ANI, but failed to get a coherent response. The SPI subject did respond promptly with an unsigned post from another IP in the SPI case. Despite a clear warning to avoid mixing static IP and account edits which was received a half-hearted response, there was an ongoing mix with IP and logged-in edits over the following months: account and IP. Not all, but many of the logged-in edits were on partially protected pages. My threshold for action was reached with the account repeating the same factually incorrect (basic arithmatic) edit: IP (October)-account (December) that had been reverted by another editor. The IP that replied on ANI, had not made other edits between the SPI and the ANI, but has only made one unsourced edit that has been reverted at Chain letter. It follows the same theme as prior unsourced edits from a defunct IP ([5], [6]) from the SPI case. That IP had been reported for sockpuppetry and there was an unsigned IP reply that argued against the need for sources since some unsourced edits had not been reverted. I hope I am not out of line coming to you. If I am, please refer me to the appropriate venue. BiologicalMe (talk) 18:56, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- BiologicalMe, acknowledging that I've seen this, but it's been a busy couple of days. I'll try to take care of this tomorrow. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:54, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. This is a case measured in edits per week, so there is no rush. Thank you for for the status update. BiologicalMe (talk) 01:09, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Protection on Rufus
The page on Rufus (software) is semiprotected due to vandalism, despite having a low amount of edits, vandalism or not. I personally think that pending changes would be a better form of protection for the remainder of the current protection. Computerfan0 (talk) 20:17, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- Computerfan0, sure, why not. Dropped to PC protection. GeneralNotability (talk) 21:03, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

this, in your capacity as an SPI clerk? My concern is that the reported sock is editing articles which the master has been topic banned from. Thanks, Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:33, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
