Points question

Hi Cwmhiraeth. I know it's a little late now but would it be possible if you would be able to tell me how many Wikicup points I would have got for Flag of Ulster had it not been held up by an RFC please? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:15, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I reckon it would have scored 19 points - 5 points x 1.4 multiplier, +5 bonus, +7 years. It would have raised your score to 244, but not given you enough to proceed to Round 4 (Raymie was excluded with 270). Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:48, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

More specific info for copyediting Carl Linde (football manager)

Hi! Would it be possible to be more specific regarding this addition of the copy edit box to Carl Linde (football manager)? I know that my English is in no way perfect, mainly that my prose is not flowing as naturally as for a native speaker, but I feel I usually do not make that many spelling or grammatical errors and that my style, cohesion, and tone is fairly consistent and "good enough". I don't think I've ever had a copy edit box slapped onto any one of my previously written articles, so some pointers about what you feel is lacking in the article would be gratefully received. :) – Elisson • T • C • 16:59, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Johan Elisson: I am sorry if you feel offended. It was my intention to review the article for DYK, but I decided to ask for a copyedit first. There is not much wrong with the article, and the grammar and spelling are satisfactory, but some of the phraseology is a bit odd, and a good copyeditor will polish it up. If the article had been shorter, I might have done it myself. If it does not get done in the next few days (copyedit or review), get in touch and I will have a go at it myself. What does "reigning Olympic champions Belgium was a positive chock" mean? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:33, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not offended at all, I apologise if that's how you interpreted me! Just curious to better understand where I fail. :) And thank you, I'll get back to you in a few days if the article hasn't been copy-edited by anyone else. For that specific wording, it should be read as "the 8–1 opening victory over reigning Olympic champions Belgium was a positive chock", i.e. a surprise victory that chocked the Swedish national team in a positive way. Could very well be something that would be phrased in a different way in English. – Elisson • T • C • 17:41, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, do you have any possibility to help me out with this? Nothing has really happened besides a few minor fixes from editors passing by. But I fully understand if you don't have the time! Just tell me, and I'll put it up at WP:COPYEDITORS instead. :) – Elisson • T • C • 19:36, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have made a start at copyediting it. It is not bad at all really. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:10, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have now finished copyediting. I don't know how he found time for all those activities. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:57, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you need help with anything related to Swedish football, however unlikely that would be, you know where to find me! And yes, he really was a remarkable figure, and the more I dig the more I find ... – Elisson • T • C • 20:14, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind taking a look at Edward Peck (academic administrator)? The original author did a rewrite after the revdel and I can't tell if it's identical to what was removed; it looks to me like a fairly close paraphrase of the source. –dlthewave 15:02, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hello Cwmhiraeth. Thanks for the help with my first full article. I did try to do a rewrite and use multiple sources but describing technical architecture is really dry and doesn't offer much space for sentence variety. I am determined to try though. Can you recommend a webpage where I can check against plagerism. The one I used previously said 0% confidence and thought I was good to go. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BildadtomyPeleg (talkcontribs) 08:53, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@BildadtomyPeleg: At the moment your draft has been reduced to a few sentences and is, as far as I can see, free from copyright problems. I use the "Earwig" tool to check articles; the percentage figure it produces may be misleading, with the comparison of the text of the article with any source being more meaningful. If you wish to expand the draft, you will need to find a reliable source and identify the information you want to use, then express it in your own words. You will not need to use the copyvio tool if you know that the text you have added is not copied. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:24, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. Sorry to bother you, but I saw you were doing some work on copyvios, and this article had an issue from page (had to delete the link), but for some reason I couldn't add a revdel request to the page. Okay, when I went to add the preceding comment to your talk page I was unallowed due to the website being on the blacklist. The website is imvbox.com.Onel5969 TT me 13:47, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Onel5969: Thanks, I have done the revision deletion. The source I found was this one. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:21, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings again. This article's prose is virtually identical to that found on this site. But I suspect it might be a mirror. I used to have a "carbon dating" link to check when the other article had been created, cd.cs.odu.edu, but that link no longer seems to be working. Is there another site which can be used to check on the date of article creation? Onel5969 TT me 12:52, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Onel5969: I don't know the answer to your question, but there are probably others who might help. Looking at Sneazzy, I see it was created on March 18th and had some citations initially, one of which was this one, to an article in French published on 11 March 2020, and another this one published the same day. Neither of these is copied or close paraphrased, so I expect the whole article is legitimate, and the Sneazzy Biography has copied Wikipedia. Hope this helps. Thank you for taking up the revdel request at Zhidou D2. However, the revision 973101013 contains the copyvio yet has not been deleted. Nardog (talk) 18:21, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Nardog: I didn't revision delete that revision because I could not see the contents, and nor could anyone else, and therefore I didn't know whether it was a copyvio or not. However, by putting the revision number into Earwig, I could see the comparison and that it was a copyvio, and I have done the revdel now. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:34, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Thank you for acknowledging me about the open-source text. I had a question, In this page they talked about "Attributing open license text in Visual editor".. Can the template Free-content attribution be used for adding text from Open source files like from Archive.org so it won't be plagiarized? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jenos450 (talkcontribs) 05:50, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really understand your question, but Archive.org does not alter the copyright status of the material archived. Attribution is needed if text is copied from elsewhere, including other Wikipedia articles. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:08, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comma restoration

Cwmhiraeth, shortly before you promoted Prep 4 to Queue 4, a comma was mistakenly removed after "Arizona" from the second-to-last hook. I've pointed out to the editor that MOS:GEOCOMMA prevails here and it should be "Glendale, Arizona,", but as it takes an admin to edit the queues, I'm hoping you can take care of the restoration if no one else has done so by the time you see this. Reverting edit

Hello sir, I hope you're doing great. Recently my edit was reverted on the page Persecution of Hindus. I wrote about Aurangzeb from a public domain book that was released by the Public Library of India. An editor reverted my edit saying the source is old. Is somewhere it is written that Raj-era cannot be used? Seeing that the author of the book himself cited sources after every chapter it should be very much acceptable. The Book is termed as a secondary source by Wikipedia. The authors were not involved in the event, so they have the emotional distance that allows them to analyze the events dispassionately. Mountstuart Elphinstone was involved in promoting education institutions across India. Citing these books are allowed everywhere and has been done previously. I believe the edit should be reverted. Please guide. Thank you so much. Jenos450 (talk) 15:35, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jenos450: You will need to be careful because there are discretionary sanctions which apply to this article, so do not rush to replace the information. I have asked RegentsPark to explain the policy he mentions that "Raj era sources are not acceptable on Wikipedia". Please discuss the matter on the article's talk page. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:55, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you so much for helping me out. It is written nowhere that a Raj historian's book can't be used as a source. There are hundreds of articles that use Books written by British historians as a source. Moreover,he could easily tell the neutral standpoint that it is written on and clearly meant to show facts, otherwise, this historian would not write cite at the end of every chapter. I do think this topic is sensitive and I don't want to rush to make edits, regardless of it, I did my best and took care of attributes and non-plagiarism.This is among the first scholarly studies of India from a yet unbiased European mind. Of course, it was revised and republished in 2011 by Noble Publishers. In fact, let me tell you, it got reissued in 1905, 1911,1916, 1996, 2011. Next, it is widely used as a source. Empire and Nation By Partha Chatterjee - 2010 acknowledged it in her source.

Nehru library hugely borrowed from Elphinstone while writing Discovery of India, in fact, Gandhi occasionally referred to his interpretation. writes Identity and Religion - Amalendu Misra who consider it one of the best interpretation out there, better than Mill. The book has been widely used and Critics has referred to his work as the best standard for half the century There are many other historians who cite Elphinstone like I just showed you. It was just not another book. Imagine his influence to be so great that even Nehru Library and Gandhi cited from him. I hope you have changed your mind about reverting my edit. Thanks! Jenos450 (talk) 14:06, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing about the subject and have no personal opinion as to whether your text should be included in the article or not. I just advised you to be cautious about reinstating the text because discretionary sanctions apply. Can you not find any more modern scholarly sources to back it up? @Bloom6132: Umm, I have removed the hidden remarks and the second bot score, for your submissions only, and will see what the bot does next. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:20, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! It worked this time :) —Bloom6132 (talk) 20:20, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The bot reverted your adjustments in my entries, see [1]. I think it will be less error-prone if we ask Jarry1250 to update the bot to calculate correctly? If I understand correctly, there are two issues: 1) the year-based bonus for DYK is off by one point and 2) redirects should not count in determining article age. HaEr48 (talk) 00:35, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have hopefully made the necessary adjustments to scores for bonus points for DYKs. It might be difficult for the bot to distinguish between a redirect and an article and this is the first time I have encountered that particular problem. As regards the other issue, I contacted Jarry earlier, but the matter may not have come to his attention, and I propose changing the scoring rules for next year to eliminate the error. As things stand, the effect of the error is minimal, docking one potential bonus point off any DYK for an article that has been in existence since 2014 or before. Round 4 scoring correction

For the sake of accuracy in posterity, I've removed an FL submission made after the August 29 deadline and corrected the now-archived table. This only makes a difference as to who has the most FLs in one round, as the competitor has already been eliminated with/without that FL. Hope that's alright with you. —Bloom6132 (talk) 13:39, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Adjudicate discussion at Wireless device radiation and health?

Might you be willing to adjudicate a discussion "Misinformation" or "information" at the talk page of Wireless device radiation and health? I was involved in the original few edit/revert cycles, started the discussion, and commented on the discussion, so I think it best that someone else who has not been involved — and other than me — determine if a consensus has been reached and thus whether the matter is resolved. I saw your name on the talk page when the article was moved in January, and I think you are an administrator. Reading at Wikipedia:Administrators#Places where administrators in particular can assist it is suggested that admins might help in such situations, hence my asking for your help. If there is a better solution that comes to mind, please feel free to let me know. Many thanks! --papageno (talk) 20:25, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[Information removed]

Huh, apparently I've never used this book on Wikipedia before. Maybe this isn't such a great idea regarding copyright, but too late, I already typed it. Cheers, Leo Breman (talk) 11:13, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Don't worry about the copyright issue, I can revision delete your post after using the information. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:22, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, had to look for myself if I couldn't find an online description. How about The Leguminosae of Porto Rico. The Flora do Brasil has a description. This book has a tad on ethnobotany: Economic plants. An index to economic products of the vegetable kingdom in Jamaica. I think I'll add a sentence on the etymology of 'mucuna' as that might be interesting. Lastly, from memory, eating velvet beans is dangerous because of antinutrients, non-functional amino-acid analogues our body cannot distinguish, isn't there something about that out there? The study you added to the end looks somewhat silly in light of this. I remember reading another study using the identical experiment to gauge the effects of these antinutrients in a related bean.Leo Breman (talk) 20:21, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't intend to add more to the description section. Before I started the article I suspected that "urens" related to stinging as there is the stinging nettle Urtica urens, but I haven't looked into the meaning of the word. As you say, male anti-fertility treatment is probably a non-starter, and I didn't care much for the idea of swallowing the hairs as an anthelmintic either, as I would have thought it would probably irritate the lining of the gut. Thank u for protecting palmetto cheese wiki page but it appears some were just waiting for the protection to go away so they could post and edit it again. I would think that this will once again cause edit warring. I do not think that the Facebook comments or articles pertaining to Palmetto cheese need to be on the wiki site. How can we protect again? Docsholiday (talk) 19:12, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It has been edited again by someone else. This is my second edit today. I only have one more edit in this 24h period. If several people edit and I am only one reverting, I will only be the one sanctioned due to 3 edit rule. Docsholiday (talk) 00:08, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It also appears that an admistrator may be one that edited with references and stated that the references are reliable and “why not”. I don’t think that posting these articles which are intended to hurt the owner and I’m his company is what Wikipedia is about. I am wrong. These additions are added only to hurt the owner. Leech scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Leech article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 21, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 21, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:41, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Caviezel

Thank you for putting the semi-protection on Jim Caviezel. A similar situation has also been going on at the page for The Passion of the Christ - IP editors adding unsourced things about the sequel, similar changes to what they were adding to Jim Caviezel page. Would it be appropriate to ask for similar protection on that page? Andrew Englehart (talk) 22:18, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There have not been any further additions since 9 September, so semi-protection is probably not justified at the moment, but if they start up again, report it. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:14, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Onel5969: I think you are right, and the Wikipedia article came first. If you look at this very first version (dated 9 May), the last paragraph is referenced to this source and provides a fair, copyvio-free, paraphrase of it. However, this page is dated 13 July. Mucuna urens not Low

I've noted that you importance-assessed your article Mucuna urens as 'Low'. Don't be modest; any animal or plant that is a pest, a weed, a crop, a medicinal, an ornamental, or in any way interesting to people should be assessed at least as 'Mid'. In WP:PLANTS, nearly 90% of all plants are assessed as 'Low'; only a tiny fraction of them are 'Mids'. Most taxa are completely uninteresting to Wikipedia's readership. Check out what I just found in my kitchen.

Hang Hing 'lentils'. A friend who works in a large Chinese supermarket gave them to me a few months ago, I completely forgot I had them. The label is flouting EU law -it calls these lentils! They are months past the sell-by date, which shouldn't matter for beans, but I'm scared of the black stuff- looks like fungi, i.e. alfatoxins. There are also weevil holes in some of the beans. I'll see if I can take a better pic in more light, and if I can grow a few (it's worked before). Leo Breman (talk) 19:00, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think they are then? I successfully grew some chickpeas and peanuts a few years ago. If there are weevil holes, you might find other things in your kitchen cupboard have been affected. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:34, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
