Revision as of 17:24, 8 July 2020

After George Floyd, an African American, was killed during a police arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in May 2020, there were major protestsin the United States and elsewhere – calling for an end to systemic racism. During the course of these protests, several controversial forms of symbolism were changed or removed.

At first, changes were focused on the removal of monuments to the Confederate States of America, its leaders, and its military. In addition to the removal of statues, numerous schools and buildings were renamed, and display of the Confederate battle flag was prohibited by many organizations.

The subjects of the protests expanded; in the United States memorials to Christopher Columbus and the conquistadors were targeted, because their colonization of the Americas resulted in the genocide of Native American people. In the United Kingdom, memorials were removed and names changed in connection with the Atlantic slave trade, British colonialism, and eugenics. In Belgium, monuments to King Leopold II were removed, and many were defaced. In Australia and New Zealand, attention was focused on the effects on British colonization on Indigenous Australian and Māori people.
