The Edificio del Seguro Médico is located in El Vedado and was built between 1955 and 1958. Designed as a mixed use building for apartments and offices for the headquarters of the Natikonal Medical Insurance, it is considered to be the best commercial architectural work of the 50s. Today it houses the Ministry of Public Health and the Prensa Latina Agency.[1]
Structure
The residential block is supported by four walls that are placed 9.4m apart. They are positioned over the office block in such a way that the two innermost structural walls are carried down to the foundations while the two outermost walls are supported by two columns each. Four walls that are 9.4m apart carry all the load of the residential block.
Architecture
Similar to the Lever House in Manhattan, the architect, Antonio Quintana Simonetti (1919-1943) sets up a similar typological relationship of two volumes of dissimilar proportion: a box at the lower level establishing a direct connection with the street (La Rampa) and a domino frame residential slab above allowing for curtain wall construction.
Towards El Malecon to the north-east, the residential block exhibits different colored balconies alternating on each floor with the floor to ceiling wooden blinds of the apartments. The south-west facade of the tower is an interesting composition contrasting the verticality of the concrete elevator volume with the horizontality of the pattern made by the exterior corridors and the windows of the rooms. The main, lower volume occupied today by the Ministry of Public Health, and perhaps anticipating the work of Robert Venturi in the ISI Building at 3501 Market Street near the Penn campus, has a totally flush facade on the north-east side of the building so no shadows from the window frames of the concrete structure of the building can register on the facade.[2] There is a tessera ceramic mural by Wifredo Lam and a mural by Mariano Rodriguez in the lobby, examples of the presence of art in the architecture of the 1050s in Havana.[3]
The vestibule with the entrance on La Rampa has a tesserae mural by Wifredo Lam entitled "Abstracción". The lobby on Calle N has "Boomerang," a mural by Mariano Rodriguez. The Edificio del Seguro Médico was awarded First Prize at the Architecture Competition in 1954 and a Gold Medal by the School of Architects in Havana in 1959.[4]
