Welcome, roadfan!

Hello, Ptb1997, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like this place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there.

If you are interested, there is already a community of users who are roadfans or who edit articles about roads, just like you! Stop by any of these WikiProjectsWP:HWY (worldwide), WP:AURD (Australia), WP:CARD (Canada), WP:HKRD (Hong Kong), WP:INRD (India), WP:UKRD (United Kingdom), or WP:USRD (United States)—and contribute. If your interest is in roads in the United States, there is an excellent new user's guide. There is a wealth of information and resources for creating a great article. If you have questions about any of these WikiProjects, you can ask on each project's talk page, or you can ask me!

If you like communicating through IRC, feel free to ask questions at #wikipedia-en-roads connect as well. Here, there are several editors who are willing to answer your questions. For more information, see WP:HWY/IRC.

Numbers

Some of your changes to baseball player articles are going against the Manual of Style. More specifically, they go against the part of the MoS that deals with numbers. Please read up on these before you make any more changes that involve changing the formatting of numbers. --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 20:26, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Again, please read and stop violating WP:NUMBERS. If a single-digit number is in word form rather than number form, do not change it to number form. It violates the MoS and is therefore considered disruptive, especially after you have already been told to stop. --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 02:30, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers…again

Buddy, this is getting old. This edit is inappropriate according to the Manual of Style. Low numbers, such as three, should be SPELLED OUT. This may begin to be considered disruptive editing if you continue to make these changes. And on top of this, I know you're getting the messages since you continue to blank your talk page and remove the warnings we've given you. Please edit according to the guidelines. Thanks, --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 12:50, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers response

I'm sorry. I just want to make improved edits to articles whose contents I believe need changed or new wording. I don't like leaving low numbers, such as five or three, spelled out. I just like them to be in number form (e.g. 5). I try to leave low numbers in letter form from now on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ptb1997 (talkcontribs)

Thank you for responding. I will acknowledge that some of your changes have indeed been constructive. However, the Manual of Style makes it clear that single-digit numbers are to be in letter form, so if they are already, do not change them. --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 16:40, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please also know that numbers should be spelled out even when it's first, second, third, etc. The change you made with this edit where you changed third to 3rd is incorrect. --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 16:46, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If it's a number that has more than one digit (such as two or three), do I leave it in number form or letter form? Or can I do both? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ptb1997 (talkcontribs)

When I say "single-digit number," I'm referring to numbers from 0 through 9 that have only one digit when written in number form. Those numbers should be written in word form when in a sentence. As such, the same also applies for writing out first, second, third, and so on, all the way up to ninth. When you reach numbers 10 and above, they can be written in number form. Also, please make sure that you're signing your talk page comments by putting the four tildes (~~~~) at the end. --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 16:51, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I understand it, but I already know what you mean when you say "single-digit numbers". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ptb1997 (talkcontribs)

Again, do not put 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. in number form, either. Write them out as first, second, third, and so on. Only put them in number form for 10th or above. Also, do not put an apostrophe before the s in RBIs, and do not put 0s before the decimals of numbers like batting averages. This edit made all of the mistakes I just mentioned. And please, sign your talk page comments by putting the four tildes (~~~~) at the end. This automatically generates a signature with your username and the time your comment was added. --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 17:36, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ptb1997: I'm sorry if I came off as rude. I've just been frustrated with the amount of vandalism that I've had to deal with over the past few months, and most of it comes from inexperienced editors who do not care about the MoS. As Christ says in the Lord's Prayer (by the way, @A guy saved by Jesus:, LOVE the username), we are to "forgive those who trespass against us." While I wouldn't necessarily consider this to be a sin, it was something that needed to be corrected. That being said, I was once an inexperienced IP editor myself who was making all kinds of similar MoS errors. Because of this, I am hesitant to reprimand others because I know I was doing similar things just a few years ago. I ask for your forgiveness and hope you continue to enjoy contributing! Thanks, --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 21:47, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Ptb1997: Yeah, I'm sorry if I came off as rude too. Patience is something I don't always do a good job of showing, but I can understand that you weren't aware of these parts of the MoS since you had probably never read them before.
@Bentvfan54321: Thanks for the compliment on my username! --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 22:02, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You weren't being rude; in fact, neither of us were. And...uh...you're welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ptb1997 (contribs)
I wasn't saying thanks to you, Ptb1997. I was thanking Bentvfan54321. He complimented my username (look at his comment and you'll see it). --A guy saved by Jesus (talk) 22:34, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, excuse me. I'm sorry. I thought you were saying thanks to me. But I know you weren't. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ptb1997 (talkcontribs)
@Ptb1997: Just remember to sign your posts (don't lose that much sweat over it, I've forgotten a few times myself). --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 23:45, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries

Hi, Ben again. Just letting you know that edit summaries are intended to be useful tools for you to EXPLAIN your changes. Leaving summaries and notes such as these (1, 2) show that you are passionate about the changes you are making; however, they do not explain why you are making those changes. If you believe your wording is more encyclopedic, then please explain why, instead of asking Sjones23 to just "leave it." Thanks, --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 15:30, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Be careful

Paul, please make sure you read these warnings that editors such as SNUGGUMS are giving you. Removing them within minutes without ANY explanation implies that you are not reading them and do not care about your non-constructive edits. We are only trying to help you learn the ropes in terms of what is right and what is wrong. If you are not willing to obey the Manual of Style (which you should generally know by now), you may be putting yourself in danger of being blocked. Thanks, --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 19:22, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary

Information icon Hi there! Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! Corkythehornetfan 19:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see you've been told about it above and when looking through your contributions, it looks like you use your edit summary very seldom. Please use it as it doesn't take to much to write a summary of what you did... even if it is just a couple of words. Corkythehornetfan 19:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just another note to both you and @Nascarking: These edit summaries (Ptb1997's Nascarking's) have no merit to them and are inappropriate. Also, Ptb1997, if you "wanted to say something to Nascarking," do it on his talk page, not with a WP:DUMMYEDIT. Dummy edits are to be used if the wrong edit summary was entered, not to deliver messages. Thanks, --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 19:44, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Bentvfan54321: I know it was inappropriate. I just get annoyed real fast when I try to submit an edit and I get an edit conflict message. I understand perfectly that all are welcome to edit these articles, but I have far more experience writing these race reports and have been the only person doing so the last two seasons.--Nascar king 21:42, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Nascarking: All I was doing was trying to tell you that you don't cuss at me, especially with the "dammit". That was not very nice of you. Ptb1997 (talk) 21:48, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Bentvfan54321: I also know it was inappropriate. I didn't do that so it could be inappropriate. And...uh...also, I kept forgetting to use the talk page. I am really, really sorry. I will try to use the talk page if I would want to say to say something to another user rather in the "Edit Summary" box. Please accept my and forgive me, alright? If so, good. Thank you. Ptb1997 (talk) 21:52, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ptb1997: Please use the edit summary when editing. I don't think it is that hard to do, and quite frankly, I'm not sure how many times you need told. It helps other users know what edits you've made. Corkythehornetfan 22:22, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ptb1997: I hate to beat a dead horse, but please—pretty please?—leave edit summaries for every edit you make. If you have time to make the edit, you have time to describe it. This recent edit would have been adequately described with any of these:

  • "Rephrase."
  • "Minor rephrasing."
  • "Rephrase potentially confusing sentence."

Also, a tip I've personally found quite helpful:

To avoid accidentally leaving edit summaries blank, you can select "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" on the Editing tab of your user preferences, if you have created an account.

Thank you!

Rebbing (talk) 00:44, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ptb – it would really be helpful if you could use your edit summary... Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 16:19, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Careful when changing wording of quotes

For future reference Paul, when you change the wording of a quote as you did with the John Oreovicz quote in 2015 Bojangles' Southern 500, put what was changed in brackets such as "doesn't do anything until [they decide] it's a good idea..." That shows that, while essence of the quote remained unchanged, the quote wasn't used verbatim. I'm taught in journalism that you can get in a lot of trouble for changing around the wording of a quote without marking the changes. It's nothing major in this case since you just did a simple rephrasing, but just remember to mark changes like that in the future.--Nascar king 16:34, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invisible comments in 1999

The question is not what should have been there before being replaced by the template, or what is presently displayed by the template, but what was replaced by the template. Even if you were to take the grammatically questionable stance that those semicolons should be commas, it's not appropriate in the comment. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 02:45, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Jenna Lee

Please note that on your most recent edit to Jenna Lee, you added her birth date to the article which overwrote previously cited information. As you did not add your own sources for your claim (whether the information presented is correct or not), I've reverted your change. Per WP:DOB and WP:BLPSOURCES, her date of birth should be discouraged if we are unable to reliably source said date over a wide number of places. GauchoDude (talk) 13:10, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Linking in bold

Please read WP:BOLDAVOID. We do not link the bold wording in the lead. A perfect example of linking would be the Appalachian State Mountaineers men's basketball article. In the season articles, you can do the same, except do it for the main athletics article, not the football one since that is already linked in the infobox.
