Winners of the award include Theodoros Angelopoulos, Satyajit Ray, Danis Tanović, Djibril Diop Mambety, Pedro Almodóvar, Paul Thomas Anderson, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Manoel de Oliveira, Michael Haneke,[2] Abbas Kiarostami, Kim Ki-duk, Aki Kaurismäki, Werner Herzog, Terrence Malick, Michael Moore, Cristian Mungiu, Jafar Panahi, Roman Polanski, Andrei Tarkovsky, Woody Allen and Wong Kar-wai.

Robert Bresson refused this award at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival.

Journal

As of 2005, it also offers an online cinema journal, Undercurrents, edited by film critic Chris Fujiwara.[3]
