Glenn James Maxwell (born 14 October 1988) is an Australian cricketer who plays Tests, One Day International and Twenty 20 International matches for Australia.[2] In 2011, he set the record for the fastest ever half-century in Australian domestic one day cricket, scoring 50 runs off 19 balls.[3][4] In February 2013, the Indian Premier League team the Mumbai Indians bought him for $1 million US,[5] and in March he made his Test debut against India in the second Test at Hyderabad.[6] In 2015, Maxwell signed with County cricket team Yorkshire. In 2016, he had scored an unbeaten 145* against Sri Lankan cricket team which is the second highest score in Twenty20 Internationals. In 2017 after scoring 104, his maiden century against India in Ranchi, he thus became the second Australian to register centuries in all three formats, the first being Shane Watson. Glen Maxwell has joined an elite club of only 13 other cricketers that have scored a century in all three formats of the game.[7]

Early life

Maxwell was born in Kew, Victoria, and played his junior cricket for South Belgrave CC. He began his cricket as a pace bowler, before remodelling his run-up and becoming an off spin bowler.[8] Despite that, he also has a deceptively powerful and accurate throw to effect run-outs.[9]

Maxwell's teammates and the media gave him the nickname "The Big Show" due to his confidence and his tendency to play extravagant shots, especially a wide array and variations of sweep shots. He however prefers the nickname "Maxi".[10][11]

Glenn Maxwell during a BBL match while playing for Melbourne Stars

2009-10

Maxwell joined the Victorian squad in July 2009.[12] He was called into the FDR squad in November when Andrew McDonald was injured.[13]

2010 Emerging Players Tournament

Maxwell was selected to play for the Australian Institute of Sports in the 2010 Emerging Players Tournament. He scored 63 against India in the semi-final.[14]

2010-11

Maxwell lept to national attention when he scored a match winning 51 off 19 balls in a Ryobi Cup game against Tasmania. It was the fastest half century in Australian domestic one day history.[15]

He followed this with an excellent Shield game against South Australia, scoring 63 and 103.[16] He scored 38 and 61 against Queensland.[17]

2011 Emerging Players Tournament

In the 2011 Emerging Players Tournament, Maxwell scored 59 off 23 balls in a game against India.[18] He then made 110 off 52 balls against South Africa.[19]

2011-12

Maxwell began the 2011-12 season well with 92 against NSW.[20] He took 3-36 against Tasmania[21] and made 61 and 72 against WA.[22] He scored 65 and took 2 wickets against Queensland.[23]

In a Ryobi Cup game against Queensland, Maxwell scored 50 off 37 balls.[24]

In the BBL Maxwell scored 124 in six innings for the Melbourne Renegades. He was briefly injured in January.

2012 IPL

Maxwell was first signed by the Delhi Daredevils in 2012 as a replacement player for Travis Birt who withdrew from the squad. Team mentor TA Sekar said he was impressed by seeing Maxwell play in the Emerging Player Contest in the previous year. "When we watched him bat, we were reminded of how we had spotted David Warner in 2008. We believe Glenn will play for Australia soon. Besides being a dashing batsman, Glenn is a solid offspinner and an amazing fielder, with infectious enthusiasm. A multi-skilled player like him will add immense value to the side."[25]

Maxwell played two games in the IPL.

2012 English Summer

Maxwell went to England to play club cricket for South Wilts and Hampshire Second XI. He played T20 for Hampshire. He played for Hampshire Second XI against Essex, scoring 66 and taking 1 for 12 in six overs. He then played T20: 32 from 12 balls against Sussex and 115 from 31 balls against MCC Young Cricketers.[26] He scored 178 runs at 59.33 and a strike rate of 178 for Hampshire in the county Twenty20 competition.

2012 UAE Tour: ODI debut

Maxwell was picked for the UAE tour of 2012. Head selector John Inverarity said Maxwell was "a versatile and lively off-spinning allrounder and brilliant fieldsman... Glenn will provide another spin bowler option on the slow, low, turning wickets in the UAE." [27]

"Maxy is someone who in terms of the 15 for the World Cup just comes with a really specific skill set that we really like," said captain George Bailey said. "He's an outstanding fielder, an outstanding athlete. When he strikes the ball he's one of the best strikers going around. He can win a game off his own bat. He's really destructive, which we love to see. He's flexible - he can bat close to the top or in the lower order. And he's a handy offspin bowler, and that was an area where we felt we needed a bit more cover."[28]

Maxwell made his debut for Australia against Afghanistan in a One Day International in the United Arab Emirates in 2012.

In his 2nd ODI, playing against Pakistan, he hit an unbeaten 56, including a six to seal victory for Australia.[29] He scored 28 and 38 in previous games.

Maxwell then played in three T20 games against Pakistan.

2012 ICC World T20 Cup

Maxwell was picked in Australia's World T20 side to play in the World Cup in Sri Lanke.[30]

"I'm very confident I can perform now at this level," said Maxwell. "Hopefully I can be that x-factor that Australia needs to win this tournament... That could mean a run out, a brilliant catch, a breakthrough wicket with the ball or big hitting. I'm really embracing that 'x-factor' tag. I don't really have too many doubts, I don't think I'm going to try to back down any time soon either."[31]

2012 CLT20

Maxwell then played for Hampshire in the CLT20 in South Africa.[32]

2012-13

On 10 January 2013, he played his first ODI at home against Sri Lanka, being involved in two run outs off consecutive balls. He remained wicketless throughout the series, however, and failed in three innings with the bat.

On 1 February 2013, he scored 51* (from 35 balls) as an opener as Australia chased down the target of 71 set by the West Indies in their first ODI. On 3 February in the series' 2nd ODI in Perth, he scored a duck, but took 4/63 with the ball to support Mitchell Starc (5/32) and help bowl out the visitors for 212 in 38.1 overs.

2013 India Tour: Test Debut

On March 2013, he made his Test debut against India in the second Test at Hyderabad.[6] He was included as the second spinner in the team, supporting Xavier Doherty. Maxwell failed to impress with the bat, making 13 and 8 in the first and second innings respectively, and was dropped from the team in the third Test.

He made a comeback in the fourth and final Test in Delhi due to a Michael Clarke injury, however failed again with the bat making just 10 and 8.

2013 IPL

At the 2013 IPL auctions, Maxwell was the most expensive player as Mumbai Indians bought him for 1 million US dollars.[33]

2013 A Team Tri Series

Maxwell was picked to play for Australia A in an A team tri series in South Africa in August 2013. He had a strong series, hitting 145 off 79 balls and 93 against India A.[34]

2013-14

2014 IPL

He was out of the Mumbai Indians retention team 2014 as per IPL 2014 retention rules.

In 2014, he was bought by Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 6 crore. In his team's opening match against Chennai Super Kings, he scored 95 runs from 43 balls (with 15 fours and two sixes) to chase down a target of 206 in 18.5 overs. In the second match against Rajasthan Royals, he hit 89 off 45 balls with eight fours and six sixes, which included frequent reverse shots, helping his team win against a high target. In the third match, Maxwell scored 95 runs from 43 balls with 9 sixes and 5 fours against Sunrisers Hyderabad and was awarded Man of the Match for the third time in a row. In the 29th match of the IPL on 7 May 2014 against Chennai Super Kings, Maxwell scored 90 runs off just 38 balls with 6 fours and 8 sixes and picked up the wicket of Suresh Raina while bowling, winning the Man of the Match award for the fourth time in the season. Punjab went on to post a massive score of 231, the highest innings score of season.[35] In 16 games he had the season's 3rd highest aggregate of 552 runs at an average of 34.50.[36]

2014 World T20

Maxwell was named in Australia's 15 man Squad for 2014 World T20. He had a great start to the tournament by making 74 of just 33 balls including 7 fours and 6 sixes against Pakistan in Australia's First group stage match.[37] He finished the series as Australia's second highest run scorer, making 147 at an average of 36.75 with a strike rate of 210.00.

2014 UAE Tour: Return to Test Side

Maxwell made a return to the Test team in October 2014 against Pakistan in the UAE, playing the 2nd match of the series. He made 37 in the first innings and just 4 in the second.

2014-15 Season

A Maxwell highlight from 2014-15 season was winning the man of the match in a BBL game scoring 66 against the Melbourne Renegades.[38]

2015: World Cup

Maxwell was also part of Australia's 15 man squad for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.[39] He made 66 runs of 38 balls in the first match against England and 88 runs off 39 balls against Afghanistan.

Later on in the tournament, he blasted a 51-ball century against Sri Lanka at the SCG, the fastest for Australia in ODI's and the second-quickest in World Cup history. It was also during early 2015 that Maxwell broke into the top 10 of the ICC one-day international batting rankings.[40][41]

He was not needed to bat in the final as Australia won the match by 7 wickets and also won their fifth World Cup title. Maxwell ended 3rd highest run scorer in Australia's team behind Steve Smith (402) and David Warner (345), scoring 324 runs at an average of 64.80 with a strike rate of 182.02.

2015 IPL

He was retained by Kings XI Punjab for 2015 IPL Season. He failed to impress in that season, not making a score higher than 43 and being dropped from the team, making an overall 145 runs in 11 games at an average of 13.18.[42]

2016 Sri Lanka Tour

On 6 September 2016 at Pallekele against Sri Lanka, Maxwell scored 145 off 65 deliveries remaining not out till the end, the second-highest individual score in Twenty20 International history for which he was awarded the man of the match.[43] Maxwell thus became the first batsman to hit a century in his maiden T20 innings as an opener. Credits to Glenn Maxwell, Australia in that very match also recorded the highest T20I team total of 263/3 surpassing the previous highest of 260/6 posted by Sri Lanka against Kenya way back in 2007.

2015-16 Summer

Maxwell had a poor ODI tournament. However he did score 79 for Victoria off 78 balls in a Shield game.[44]

2016-17

Maxwell attempted to transfer to the NSW team for the 2016-17 summer but was refused.

Maxwell was dropped from the Victorian side for the first match of the 2016-17 Sheffield Shield season. "He should have been playing,” said test selector Mark Waugh. “From an Australian point of view, he’s quite capable of playing Test match cricket. You need to be asking the Victorian selectors why they left him out. It surely can’t be cricket-related because he would be in the team.”[45]

Maxwell was picked in the next Shield game and scored 81.

2017

Tour of India

Maxwell again made a comeback against India on 16 March 2017 and scored his maiden Test century scoring 104 off 185 balls.

2017 IPL

Maxwell had a disappointing IPL in 2017. Kings team director Virender Sehwag said ""We always knew that when Maxwell fires, then he can win the match on his own. But he didn't fire in most games. That is a big disappointment... He didn't take the responsibility as a captain and didn't perform for Kings XI Punjab".[46]

2017 Bangladesh Tour

Maxwell was picked on the 2017 tour of Bangladesh. "I don't think I will change too much from what I did in India," he said. "I thought I had really good plans during the Test series against them. I will employ probably something similar, basically backing my defense and trying to revolve my game around that. It is basically going to be batting long periods of time and making sure that when we do bat those long periods of time we are making big hundreds."[47]

At the end of the tour Darren Lehman said "With No.6 in Australia, it's totally different to Asia. We'll certainly be looking at that position, and anyone can jump out of the pack in the three Shield games and what we think the best make-up is for that first Test. Glenn is there at the moment, like everyone else, he'll have to perform."[48]
