General Hospital is the longest running American television serial drama, airing on ABC.[1] Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, who originally set it in a general hospital (hence the title), in an unnamed fictional city. In the 1970s, the city was named Port Charles, New York.[2] The series premiered on April 1, 1963.[1] The following is a list of characters that have appeared on the soap opera in 2016, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by executive producer Frank Valentini and head writers Jean Passanante and Shelly Altman.[3]

Matthew Mayes is an M.D., played by Matt Riedy chief of neuropathology.[4]

Storylines

When Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) has a seizure in early January, Mayes starts treating her. He believes that she has brain cancer. Mayes orders a biopsy. Griffin Munro does not believe that Tracy has cancer. When the biopsy reveals that she does not have cancer, Mayes does not know the cause of her seizures. Mayes and Munro argue over what direction Tracy's treatment should be. Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) contacts Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton), an infectious disease doctor. When Mayes sees Munro and Finn conferring with each other about Tracy's biospy, he tells them that he will see that they will not practice medicine as they went behind his back.

In January 2016, ABC Soaps In Depth reported that Cohen would be hired as a series regular.[5]

Storylines

In late January 2016, Munro is contacted by Lucas Jones (Ryan Carnes) as Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) is in need a of a new neuropathologist since Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson) moved to Berkeley, California with his family. Looking over Sonny's chart, he realizes that Sonny can walk. Sonny asks him to keep silent. In mid March, Griffin decides to follow Anna Devane (Finola Hughes). Anna, thinking she is being stalked, asks what he is doing, but before he can tell her why, he is summoned to General Hospital by Dillon Quartermaine (Robert Palmer Watkins). Dillon wants him to look over his mother's (Jane Elliot) chart. Munro has a difference of opinion with Matthew Mayes (Matt Riedy) over Tracy's diagnosis. Mayes believes Tracy has cancer, however, Griffin thinks otherwise. When Anna meets Griffin, he tells her that he is the son of Duke Lavery. He gives Anna test results confirming that he is Duke's son. Tracy takes a turn for the worse which makes him ask Brad Cooper (Parry Shen) to give him a peak at Tracy's biopsy. When it is confirmed that Tracy does not have cancer, Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) contacts Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton), an infectious disease doctor. In early April, Tracy's health worsens. Finn tells the Quartermaine family that she needs surgery. When asked who she would like to have the surgery performed by, Tracy picks Munro.
