Kingsman: The Secret Service is a 2014 British spy action comedy film directed by Matthew Vaughn and based on the comic book The Secret Service created by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar. The screenplay was written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman. The film's cast includes Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton, and Michael Caine.

Plot

Kingsman: The Secret Service is based upon the comic book by Mark Millar, and depicts a veteran secret agent who leads a young protégé into the world of espionage.

On a mission in the Middle East, secret agent Harry Hart is unable to prevent the death of one of his fellow agents. Feeling guilt, he personally delivers a bravery medal to the man’s widow and young son, saying that if they ever need help they should call the phone number on the back of the medal and deliver a coded message.

17 years later the boy, Eggsy, is now a teenager who gets into trouble with the police after stealing and joy riding a car. In custody he remembers the medal and calls the number on the back. He is quickly released and met outside the police station by Harry, who introduces him to the world of the secret agency that he and Eggsy’s late father work for, the Kingsmen.

Another Kingsman agent, Lancealot, who was on inducted during the mission shown in the opening, is killed on a mission to find missing scientist James Arnold, creating a vacancy for a new agent. Harry proposes Eggsy as a candidate and together with other young hopefuls including a girl named Roxy, he is enrolled on the training program designed to weed out the unsuitable until only one candidate remains. The training is overseen by Merlin, a senior Kingsman with each recruit being assigned a new dog to train. Eggsy and Roxy emerge as the last two potential candidates, but Eggsy fails the final challenge to kill his pet dog, J.B and Roxy is given the job.

Meanwhile the Kingsmen are investigating the activities of technology tycoon Richmond Valentine who appears to be a great philanthropist, giving away free SIM cards around the world, but is suspected to be involved in a number of disappearances of VIPs. Harry is sent to investigate and follows a lead to an obscure church in the American Midwest. At the church, Valentine conducts a test, broadcasting a signal to phones containing his SIM card which causes humans to become uncontrollably violent.

After a lengthy melee, which only Harry survives, he is confronted and killed by Valentine while Eggsy watches via video link. Valentine’s plan becomes clear – he is going to broadcast the signal worldwide using his satellite network and cause a mass cull of the human race, sparing the Earth from further environmental damage by man. Eggsy discovers that Arthur, the head of the Kingsmen, is secretly one of the many VIPs that Valentine has implanted with a device to block the signal and thus guarantee their surivival. He avoids being killed off by Arthur, switching a poisoned glass of brandy so that Arthur dies instead.

Eggsy, Roxy and Merlin head to Valentine’s mountainous secret base to stop Valentine from executing his plan; Roxy will destroy Valentine's satellite while Eggsy stops Valentine himself. During the raid on Valentine's base the implanted devices are triggered, causing them to explode and kill off all of the VIPs who were part of Valentine’s plan. After a battle with Valentine’s assistant, Gazelle, Eggsy kills Valentine and prevents the end of the world.

Cast

Production

The film was announced in late October 2012 after Matthew Vaughn dropped out of directing X-Men: Days of Future Past to adapt the Mark Millar comic book The Secret Service. On 27 March 2013, 20th Century Fox confirmed the film and set 14 November 2014 as release date for the film worldwide and the production will begin in August.[7] Colin Firth joined the cast to lead the film on 29 April 2013.[8] On 3 June 2013, it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks to join as a villain.[9] In September 2013, Vaughn cast Sophie Cookson for the female lead, preferring a newcomer over more experienced candidates like Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote;[10] Cookson is a 2013 Oxford School of Drama graduate who appeared in the 2013 TV film of Moonfleet.[11]

Filming

Principal photography began 6 October 2013 in Deepcut, Surrey[12][13][14] on a budget reported to be one-third of that for Skyfall (or roughly $60-65 million).[15]

The Alexandra Road Estate in Camden[16] was used for Eggsy's home area, and some scenes were filmed at Imperial College London.

While rumors of several celebrity cameo parts were published; Iranian chess grandmaster Pouya Idani, Adele,[17] Elton John,[17][18] Lady Gaga[19][20] and David Beckham,[17] none of these rumours proved to be true.

Music

On 20 May 2014, it was reported that Henry Jackman and Matt Margeson would be composing the music for the film.[21] On 11 July 2014, it was announced that Gary Barlow would be writing the music for the film. A song from Take That's seventh studio album III, "Get Ready for It", will play during the end credits.[22]

Release

The premiere of the film was held in London, with director Matthew Vaughn and stars Colin Firth, Taron Egerton and Mark Strong attending, and Take That performing the film's theme live.[23] A regional premiere was held in Glasgow at exactly the same time as the London event, and live footage was streamed from the premiere to Glasgow.[24] Mark Millar also hosted a charity screening of the film ahead of its release in Glasgow to raise money for his old school, St. Bartholomews.[25]

The film was released in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2015.[26]

Marketing

The trade paperback book was released on 14 January 2015.[27]

The Kingsman Label

Director Matthew Vaughn teamed up with luxury retailer Mr Porter to create a 60-piece clothing line based on the film and changed the film’s name from The Secret Service to Kingsman: The Secret Service. Mr Porter worked with the film’s costume designer, Arianne Phillips, to design the bespoke suiting, while everything from the ties and shirts to umbrellas and shoes were designed by heritage brands such as Cutler & Gross, George Cleverly and Mackintosh. The collaboration is the first of its kind, making Kingsman: The Secret Service the first film from which customers can buy all of the outfits they see.[28][29]

The film includes significant product placement for Adidas Originals.[30]

Reception

Rotten Tomatoes sampled 42 critics and judged 81% of the reviews positive with an average rating of 6.8/10. The site calls the film "stylish, subversive, and above all fun".[31] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 73 out of 100, based on reviews from 8 critics, indicating broadly favourable reviews.[32]

Sequel

In a interview with Red Carpet TV, Millar revealed the possiblabity of a sequel if the fans like the film.[33]
