In the town of Sleepy Hollow, New York in 1781, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) decapitates the Headless Horseman in battle but is mortally wounded himself, and collapses. Both he and the Horseman awaken in 2013 in Sleepy Hollow, New York. The latter kills the local sheriff, August Corbin (Clancy Brown) and Crane is inadvertently arrested for his murder by Corbin's former partner, Lieutenant Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie). Crane asserts that not only is he innocent of the murder, but that he's actually just awakened after several centuries of entombment. Mills is inclined to believe Crane, and together they learn that the Horseman is actually Death, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and is seeking his head to summon the other horsemen to bring about the Apocalypse. Mills and Crane recover the head before the Horseman does, thanks to a dream sent by Crane's wife (Katia Winter), executed centuries earlier for witchcraft. Crane and Mills also discover that Corbin had been keeping detailed files on the various mysteries of Sleepy Hollow.

Mills' superior Frank Irving (Orlando Jones) reluctantly allows her to work with Crane due to the events occurring in Sleepy Hollow; the two begin using Corbin's gathered archives of occult material. Elsewhere, Andy Brooks (John Cho), a former fellow police officer who was killed in the previous episode assisting the Headless Horseman, is reanimated and given new orders to resurrect the witch, Serilda of Abaddon (Monique Ganderton). Serilda completes the ritual for her resurrection by hunting down and killing the descendants of the magistrate who burnt her for witchcraft, but Crane and Mills destroy her with explosives. Mills has a dream/vision of Corbin, who tells her to not be afraid of '49' - the room number of a mental hospital where her sister Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) resides.

A psychoanalyst connected to the Mills sisters mysteriously commits suicide and Crane and Abbie Mills visit her sister at the institution. When others commit suicide as well, the Witnesses learn that the source of the mysterious deaths is the Mohawk dream spirit Ro'kenhronteys, or the Sandman. By entering the dream world of this spirit, they are able to resolve the problem and confront their past guilts and atone for them. When Mills goes to re-visit her sister, she learns that Jenny has escaped.
44"The Lesser Key of Solomon"Paul EdwardsDamian KindlerOctober 7, 2013 (2013-10-07)1AWL037.96[6]
Mills and Crane search for Jenny, tracking her down to a cabin belonging to Corbin. Mills further learns that Corbin had Jenny track down rare and often magical objects, such as a sextant. This object reveals an old map of Sleepy Hollow marking the hidden location of The Lesser Key of Solomon, a book that can open a doorway to the seventh circle of Hell. A secret group of Hessians aligned with the Horseman get their hands on both the sextant and the book, but Mills destroys the book and ends the ritual. The Witnesses also learn that the demon they are facing is named Moloch.
55"John Doe"Ernest DickersonMelissa BlakeOctober 14, 2013 (2013-10-14)1AWL047.59[7]
A sickly boy suffering from an unknown disease is discovered in the woods and immediately put under CDC quarantine. Because the boy can only speak Middle English and says he is from Roanoke, Crane deduces that the child is from the lost Roanoke Colony from the 16th century. Investigating, the Witnesses discover a portal to a hidden village and the people within to be suffering from - but not dying from - the same illness, originating from the Horseman, Pestilence. The boy was lured out into the present to spread his disease, but Crane and Mills return him to his village, and the people both within and without the village are cured.

Crane is kidnapped by Freemasons and, after confirming his identity, they ask him to take poison that will kill both him as well as the Horseman (since their blood is linked occultly). Mills tracks down a Sin Eater named Henry (John Noble) so that Crane can be sanctified, and together they prepare for the Horseman's return that evening at nightfall.
77"The Midnight Ride"Doug AarniokoskiHeather V. RegnierNovember 11, 2013 (2013-11-11)1AWL067.03[9]
Crane discovers the Freemasons in Sleepy Hollow have been beheaded by the Horseman, and realized that the creature is seeking its own head. Irving recovers the head from the lab (where it has stymied attempts to categorize it) before the Horseman comes for it, barely escaping with his life. Crane and Mills cannot destroy the head by normal means, so they use it to lure and trap the Horseman using both science and magic.
88"Necromancer"Paul EdwardsMark Goffman & Phillip IscoveNovember 18, 2013 (2013-11-18)1AWL077.09[10]
Mills and Crane interrogate the Horseman with Andy's help, despite the dead policeman Brooks' warnings not to do so. During the interrogation the Horseman reveals himself to be Abraham, Katrina's former fiancé and Ichabod's friend who was killed by Hessians and turned into the Horseman by Moloch. Brooks, under control of Moloch, sneaks a druidic relic into the chamber where the Horseman is being held and uses it to dispel the magical bindings of the chamber built by Thomas Jefferson. This allows Moloch's hellish minions to be summoned into the chamber, who disappear with Brooks and the Horseman just as the Horseman is about to kill Crane.

Mills and Crane investigate the missing case of Lena Gilbert (Erin Cahill), a wealthy grand daughter of a mining and oil magnate. Lena went missing while visiting her country house owned by her family. Turns out, the house is owned by an old acquaintance of Crane, Lachlan, who put a hex around the house as a protective spell. Crane especially takes an interest with the case because Lena circled a name "Katrina C" (which he assumed as Katrina Crane) in a paper that she left behind. Lena explains that Katrina was the last person who took sanctuary in the house a long time ago. The house is haunted and as a result, Lena, Crane and Mills are attacked on their way out from the trapped house. Mills has a vision of Katrina giving birth to a baby boy while taking sanctuary in the house, Crane's son.

Ichabod and Abbie, while studying George Washington's Bible, learn of a map of purgatory that was created after Washington had presumably died and was likely buried along with his body. They then enlist the help of Henry Parrish in locating Washington's burial site and travel with Henry to find the map. Meanwhile, Andy, after earlier begging Abbie to hand over the map, offers himself to Moloch and is transformed into a demon. Andy is ordered by Moloch to locate the map. Inside Washington's tomb, Ichabod, Abbie, and Henry locate the map, but are then attacked by Andy. They manage to successfully escape and trap Andy in the tomb. Abbie then warns Ichabod of what might happen should they use the map to rescue Katrina from purgatory and tells him to burn the map. Ichabod understands and reluctantly burns the map.
1313"Bad Blood"Ken OlinAlex Kurtzman & Mark GoffmanJanuary 20, 2014 (2014-01-20)1AWL127.05[14]
Ichabod and Abbie travel to purgatory to enlist the help of Katrina when they learn from Henry Parrish that the Horseman of War will appear in the real world during the forthcoming Eclipse. When they arrive in Purgatory, Abbie and Ichabod are separated and both seemingly are living a false reality surrounded by friendly faces. When they both come to realize that what they are seeing is not real, they reunite and travel to the church to find Katrina. Meanwhile in the real world, Captain Frank Irving, seemingly unable to explain why a police officer and a priest were killed protecting his daughter, confesses to the murders when he learns that his daughter may be arrested. At the Church, Abbie and Ichabod learn from Katrina that she is unable to leave unless someone were to take her place, to which Abbie agrees. When Ichabod and Katrina return to the real world they travel to the location with the four white trees in the hope Katrina can prevent the Horseman of War's arrival. When their efforts aren't successful, Henry reveals that the Horseman is not there. He restrains Ichabod and Katrina on the trees before revealing to their horror that he is their son and that he was resurrected by Moloch 13 years ago, something Jenny learns but is unable to reveal when she is ambushed by the Headless Horseman. He then reveals that he is the Horseman of War, and allows the Horseman of Death to take Katrina away to Ichabod's horror. Back in Purgatory, Abbie learns what really happened the day she and Jenny saw Moloch in the woods as teenagers and that the memory was removed from her mind. In the real world, Henry then forces Ichabod into a wooden casket, binds him with vines, and then breaks the second seal. Henry then closes the casket, ending the first season.

Ichabod and Abbie learn of a creature with the power of a horseman called a "Kindred" created by Benjamin Franklin with body parts of his strongest soldiers, but he was unable to bring it to life as it required a horseman body part. Ichabod wants to use it to battle the horseman while he sneaks into the house where Katrina is being held, Abbie is against the idea but is convinced by Ichabod to go along with the plan. As they require the horseman's head, Abbie decides to visit Frank Irving in jail and learns that it's being held in a deposit box in the bank. Before she leaves, she urges him to tell the truth about what happened with his daughter so he's moved to the psych ward. Now outside of Abraham's house, Ichabod places the horseman's head on the Kindred's body and recites the incantation to bring it to life and watches on as it battles the two horsemen. With the horseman distracted, Ichabod sneaks into Abraham's home and reunites with Katrina, but is dismayed when she tells him she wants to stay and learn more about Moloch's plans. Ichabod is at first against the idea, but agrees before escaping. The next day Ichabod and Abbie discuss Katrina and wonder what happened to the Kindred after the battle. Meanwhile, Henry decides to visit Frank Irving to offer him a contract to enlist his services as a lawyer. Upon signing it, Irving cuts his finger, signing the contract in blood.

Ichabod and Abbie go to the asylum where Irving is being held, only to find out that his lawyer (Henry Parish) has barred them from seeing him. Meanwhile, Jenny has gotten out of prison thanks to Abbie, who bargained with the new sheriff so Jenny could spend the rest of her sentence doing community service. Much to Abbie's surprise, Jenny is not happy to see Abbie, in fact, she is rageful that Abbie did not tell her about her mother being killed in the asylum. After an argument between the sisters, Ichabod and Abbie learn that Henry has brought a cursed coin, one of the thirty pieces of silver given to Judas for betraying Jesus, that makes the dark side of people be revealed (which is what caused Benedict Arnold to turn against the colonists) back to the present day. After the man who has the coin is imprisoned for killing his father, the coin is taken into police custody, where Henry switches the coin with a quarter. Henry gives the coin to an unsuspecting Jenny, who now wants to kill the new sheriff because Jenny believes that she is the reason for her mother's death. Abbie and Ichabod, with the help of new ally Nick Hawley, are able to talk Jenny down, and imprison the coin in sanctified glass (where it can't affect anyone). At the end of the episode, Henry burns the bed where Katrina gave birth to him in rage.
