MaI regulon is one of the set of genes stimulated by catabolite activator protein commonly known as CAP. This genes codes for a set of Enzymes involved in metabolizing the sugar maltose,a disaccharides made of two suger units.[1] The genes encolding these enzymes are regulated together but in contrast to an Operon, they are not contiguous and are controlled by multiple promoters[2]

Role of CAP in the MaI regulon

Since maltose is an alternative energy source like lactose,it is not suprising that the MaI regulon is also controlled by CAP but CAP exert its influence in a novel way in this case.[3] A protein called MaIT also regulate the MaI promoter. This protein requires ATP and the maltose regulon inducers maltotriose for its activity. Some MaI promoter(MaLEp and MaIKp) depend on both MaIT and CAP. Others (pulAp,pulCP and MaIpp) rely only on MaIT while one(MaITp) is regulated by CAP alone.[4]
