Welcome to the 2013 WikiCup

Hello, Another Believer, and welcome to the 2013 WikiCup! Your submissions' page is here. The first round will last until the end of February, at which point the top 64 scorers will advance to the second round. We will be in touch at the end of every month, and signups are going to remain open until the end of January; if you know of anyone else who may like to take part, please let them know! A few reminders:

  • The rules can be found here. There have been a few changes from last year, which are listed on that page.
  • Anything you submit must have been nominated and promoted in 2013, and you need to have completed significant work upon it in 2013. (The articles you review at good article reviews does not need to have been nominated in 2013, but you do need to have started and completed the review in 2013.) We will be checking.
  • If you feel that another competitor is breaking the rules or abusing the competition in some way, please let a judge know. Please do not remove entries from the submissions' pages of others yourself.
  • Don't worry about calculating precisely how many points everything is worth. The bot will do that. The bot may occasionally get something wrong- let a judge know, or post on the WikiCup talk page if that happens.
  • Please try to be prompt in updating submissions' pages so that they can be double-checked.

Overall, however, don't worry, and have fun. It doesn't matter if you make the odd mistake; these things happen. Questions can be asked on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn and The ed17 12:58, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page appearance

Hello! This is a note to let the main editors of the article Grammy Award for Best Polka Album know that it will be appearing as the main page featured list on January 21, 2013. You can view the TFL blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured list/January 21, 2013. If you think it is necessary to change the main date, you can request it with the featured list directors The Rambling Man (talk · contribs), Dabomb87 (talk · contribs) or Giants2008 (talk · contribs), or at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured list. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions of the suggested formatting. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :D Thanks! Tbhotch. Grammatically incorrect? Correct it! See terms and conditions. 03:50, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Drop

I didn't want to taint the talk page with possible OR. The reception section may have to balance the point of view though. I live in Candada and grew up in Vancouver. We have many proud artists here that should have complained that it was not commissioned to a Vancouverite or Canadian. I will see if I can find sources to balance the POV. Do you mind if we include a low key sentence about this?--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:07, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I will retract the above. It seems that the selection process was balanced with local artists involved. Many may agree that local art does not need to be created by locals and thus be able to create works in other countries without controversy. One blog says it was built in Calgary. I may find a better source for that.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:43, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comments. I do not think the reception section is unbiased, I think it just needs to be expanded with other reviews and points of view. --Another Believer (Talk) 21:29, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I only helped with a GA article once and had a big edit war about it. I just read the GA criteria and it may be ready now. The reception section is 100% positive and some may think it needs tabloid dirt added as a counter or they may claim that section is one sided. (kidding).--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:50, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hah! I have experience promoting articles to Good status, I was just wondering if you happened to come across any other sources. The article still needs to be expanded further, but hopefully I can finish the job soon! --Another Believer (Talk) 00:02, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am hoping that at least a couple of folks from the OHSU pilot project will show up. I gave a talk/presentation today and sent out an invite but it is short notice. -- UseTheCommandLine (talk) 20:08, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is a strange note to have to write. I went downtown this afternoon, parked near the Post Office, and walked to where I thought the meeting was. Nobody seemed to be about. I walked around, puzzled. After a while another person came down the street looking for the meeting. We exchanged introductions, tried to figure out what the problem was, and waited a while longer for others to show up. Eventually I said to User:EncMstr, the other person, that I was going home, and I did. Where he went, I don't know. Perhaps he found you. When I got home, I discovered to my horror that I had been looking for you at 322 N.W. Seventh rather than Sixth. I hope this mistake was a one-off and not the start of a trend. Sorry. Draft for the edit-a-thon February 9

Hi Another Believer. Thanks for the invitation to the edit-a-thon, although I can't attend. It sounds like fun. I'm semi-active on Wikipedia these days, but I have a mostly-abandoned draft of the famous Pok Pok restaurant at User:David1217/Pok Pok. If you or any of the other attendees would like to take a crack at it, please do. Sincerely, David1217 What I've done 03:46, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you much for taking the time to invite. I'm planning to be in SoCal chasing waves and biotech drones if possible for Feb, but I'll be back to the nw for the sunshine July 5th. :p Hope to catch you at a meetup later this year. here 08:44, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Revising the nominations process at Wikipedia:Today's article for improvement

I'm seeking wider input on a proposed redesign of the nomination process over at TAFI. The current method could benefit from some streamlining and usability tweaks. If you feel so inclined, I'd like to hear your opinion on the matter. --NickPenguin(contribs) 23:02, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! TAFI

Hello,
In the past few days, Today's Articles for Improvement has gone through many changes.

  • We have modified the process for adding Nominations, which now uses a template/table format and requires only 3 supports for an article to be selected.
  • There is now a Holding Area, where articles are kept for discussion before being selected for a particular date.
  • The TAFI schedule now involves adding 10 articles weekly, chosen from a variety of topics.
  • We now have an Accomplishments page where we will be highlighting our older TAFI articles which have now become quality articles on the Wikipedia.

The Project is almost ready to hit the Main Page, where it will be occupying a section just below "Did you Know" section. Three article from the weekly batch of 7 will be displayed randomly at the main page, the format of which can be seen at the Main Page sandbox. There is also an ongoing discussion at the Main page talk over the final details before we can go forward with the Main Page.

If you have any ideas to discuss with everyone else, please visit the TAFI Talk Page and join in on the ongoing discussions there. You are also invited to add new nominations, and comment and suport on the current ones at the Nominations page. You can also help by helping in the discussions at the Holding Area.

Above all, please do not forget to improve our current Today's Articles for Improvement

Thank you and hoping to have some productive work from you at the Project,

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
