[[Komal Nahta]] stated thatSpecial 26 may be a fairly entertaining thriller but it is not without some glaring flaws in its screenplay. Special Chabbis [2] is a Bollywood heist drama film directed by Neeraj Pandey of A Wednesday fame. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles with Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpai and Anupam Kher in supporting roles. The film is based on a real life group of con artists who pulled off many clever robberies during 1980's, and robbed famous businessmen and politicians by pretending to be the CBI or Income tax officers, on the pretext of conducting raids they would take away all the black money hoarded by them, the film also takes its concept from the real-life daring heist dated 19-March-1987 where the same group posing as CBI officers executed a daylight income tax raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai, and disappeared with jewellery worth lakhs. The movie is set in the early 1980's.[3]

Plot

The film opens on the date 18/03/1987 where we see a walk-in CBI interview taking place, held by the characters of Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher. The film then goes into flashback.

We see Ajay Singh Akshay Kumar calling a local police station in order to obtain more man-power for a CBI raid. He speaks to SI Ranveer Singh (Jimmy Shergill), who agrees to send the required number of support officers. Ajay, along with accomplice P.K Sharma Anupam Kher, Joginder and Iqbal, proceed to meet the support officers and conduct the raid.

Following the successful raid at a minister's house, it's revealed that Ajay and P.K Sharma are fake CBI officers, along with two accomplices. We see them moving to different parts of the country from which they're from and merging into their every-day lifestyles. This is where we're introduced to Ajay's love interest, Priya Kajal Aggarwal, an about to be married teacher.

The crew meet again in Chandigarh at the behest of P.K Sharma, for his daughter's wedding.

We see SI Ranveer Singh with his senior officer meet the victim of the earlier raid (the minister). The minister reveals that he doesn't want this news to appear in the public domain because he wants to protect his image. The senior officer suspends Ranveer with his colleague Shantiji (Divya Dutta) for being irresponsible.

We are then introduced to CBI officer Wasim Khan Manoj Bajpayee who lives with his wife and child in New Delhi. We follow him apprehending a criminal by the name of Gupta, and are given an insight into his character. A disgraced Ranveer Singh meets Wasim, and they decide to join hands to apprehend these criminals.

Meanwhile, the next raid is being planned by Ajay and co, due to be conducted on a traders' business in Kolkata. Following the more difficult but successful raid, Wasim insists that this should be reported in the newspaper, despite nobody coming forward to report it themselves, as black money is involved.

Upon seeing this in the newspaper, Ajay and P.K Sharma decide to conduct their "big job", a final raid in Mumbai.

After the second raid, the story briefly focuses on Ajay and Priya, with the latter's marriage being planned. She insists to go with Ajay for the final job, but he tells her to meet him at the airport at 4pm on the day.

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh finds information about P.K Sharma, and Wasim orders that calls from his house must be recorded. This successful as, when on the phone to Ajay, several details about them are divulged to Wasim, including the names Joginder and Iqbal, and 'Ajju' (Ajay's nickname). As a result, under the orders of Wasim, officers successfully track the crew to Mumbai, and to a hotel in which they're staying. We learn that they plan to raid and hence rob a big jewellery store.

Now, Ajay, followed by a CBI officer, goes to a newspaper to advertise for '50 dynamic graduates', with details of an interview stated. Wasim decides to embed his officers amongst the candidates, and they are selected.

Following this, Wasim is able to find out the details of the training process, which includes a mock raid. It is stated that, on the day, the candidates will be trained and then lead out for the mock interview in the afternoon. However, the undercover officers point out that no details about the raid have come to light at this point.

In order to find out more, Wasim and Ranveer go to the hotel and force their way into P.K Sharma's room. He divulges, following a threat of violence, the information about the raid. He also mentions that Ajay is taking revenge on the CBI for not appointing him. Wasim orders Sharma to make sure everything proceeds as normal.

On the day of the raid, Wasim takes charge of the jewellery store, and replaces the jewellery with fake jewellery, with the originals being moved to the jewellery store's nearby workshop. Also, he is given constant information about the activity of the crew and recruits. Ajay informs the recruits that he will come in a different vehicle to them. Sharma leaves with the recruits in a bus, but leaves the bus at police headquarters, telling that he will arrive with Ajay. He also states that nobody should leave the bus until they arrive, and that he is going to verify the paperwork for the raid. In reality, he goes to meet Ranveer Singh. Together with Ajay, a raid of the workshop is carried out. Ajay then goes and meets Priya at the airport.

Meanwhile, at the jewellery store, Wasim is informed that the raid was conducted at the workshop, and works it all out for himself, laughing loudly.

The film ends with Wasim being told over the phone that the CBI has information about the perepetrators, thus suggesting a sequel.

Cast

Development

The film takes its foundations from the infamous robbery of 19-March-1987, when 26 people posing as income tax officials raided a famous jewellery store in Opera House, Mumbai. They had walked away with jewels worth lakhs. This incident shocked jewellers across Zaveri Bazaar. According to the sources, Neeraj waited for almost three years after A Wednesday, as he wanted Akshay Kumar for the film. Akshay will play the leader of the 26-men army in the film. His character name will interestingly be "Mr. Ajay Singh" (meaning 'unconquered lion' in English) .[4]

Manoj Bajpai has been roped in to play the real CBI officer,[5] and Anupam Kher will also be playing a vital role in the film.[6] Kajal Aggarwal plays a specially-written role of Mon Singh's love-interest (she is the only female character in the film).[7] Earlier actors Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan were roped in to play the lead. But the role went to Kumar as he was Pandey's first choice.[8] Kajal Aggarwal is playing role of a school teacher.[9][10] Akshay Kumar slashed his fee by half for Special Chabbis.[11][12]
