"Somebody That I Used to Know"
Song

"Somebody That I Used To Know" is a song recorded by Belgian-Australian singer and songwriter Gotye and features New Zealand singer Kimbra. The song was released on Australia and New Zealand by Eleven Music on 5 July 2011 as the lead single from his third studio album, Making Mirrors (2011). It was later released by Universal Music in December 2011 on the United Kingdom, and in January 2012 on the United States. "Somebody That I Used To Know" was written and recorded by Gotye on his parent's house on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria and is lyrically related to the experiences he has had with relationships.

"Somebody That I Used To Know" is a mid-tempo alternative rock and indie pop ballad song. It samples Luiz Bonfá's song "Seville". The song received positive reception from most music critics, which noted the similaritires between the song and works by Sting and American folk band Bon Iver, but crafted "for the music-buying masses." It was also compared with Human League's "Don't You Want Me". The song won the Triple J Hottest 100 poll at the end of 2011, as well as ARIA Awards for song of the year and best video, while Kimbra was voted best female artist and Gotye was named best male artist and producer of the year.[1]

Commercially, the song has become Gotye's most successful and his signature song. "Somebody That I Used To Know" has topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart as well as other 23 national charts, and reaching the top 10 in more than 30 countries around the world. As of May 2012, the song has sold more than one million copies in the United Kingdom becoming the best selling single of the year so far; and four million in the United States. It is the most downloaded song of all time in Belgium, Netherlands' biggest selling single ever; and the third best-selling single in Germany. "Somebody That I Used To Know" had sold more than 7 million copies worlwide, becoming one of the best-selling digital singles of all time.

"Somebody That I Used To Know" have been performed several times on live shows such as The Voice, American Idol and Saturday Night Live. It was covered by Canadian indie rock group Walk Off the Earth using a single guitar played simultaneously by all five band members. An accompanying music video was directed by Natasha Pincus. The video premiered on 30 July 2011 and shows Gotye and Kimbra semi-naked against a white backdrop, and while they sing, a pattern of paint gradually covers his skin and the backdrop via stop motion animation. As of May 2012, the video has over 211 million views on YouTube.

Composition

The song was produced and written by Gotye in his parents' barn on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, where it was recorded. The song begins sampling Luiz Bonfá's track "Seville" along with the beats playing and a sparse xylophone solo. Gotye sings, seemingly addressing a past lover, discussing the ways in which he reminisces sometimes, and the nature of love. His voice then leaps an octave for the chorus, in which he expresses distaste at how he was treated "like a stranger" during the break-up, the stronger tone matching the hurt of the sentiment.

Kimbra then sings her verse, seemingly in response, declaring that she too felt hurt at her treatment during the relationship, and was "screwed [...] over" yet made to feel it was her fault. Her voice rises in the chorus with a different melody, creating a polyphonic effect, and though harmonious it is almost as if the two voices are in argument, fitting the relationship breakdown theme of the song. After the second chorus, Gotye continues to perform the chorus as the song fades. The song finishes with Gotye and Kimbra both saying 'somebody'. [citation needed]

In an interview, Gotye stated that the song was "definitely drawn from various experiences I've had in relationships breaking up, and in the parts of the more reflective parts of the song, in the aftermath and the memory of those different relationships and what they were and how they broke up and what's going on in everyone's minds. Yeah, so it's an amalgam of different feelings but not completely made up as such." In an interview with Rolling Stone Australia, he described the song as "a curated reflection of multiple past relationships", but revealed the chorus was directly related to one ex-girlfriend. He stated: "It wasn't a nasty break-up, but it was messy in the sense that we hurt each other more than we needed to because it wasn’t a clean break... We both realised we had to move on and we haven’t seen each other since."[2]

Reception

Critical reception

The song was compared with Bon Iver's music, but with a more broad appeal.

Besides the commercial success, it also received critical acclaim. Take40 Australia elaborated on the single's reception at the 2011 Splendour in the Grass festival; "Gotye's latest song featuring Kimbra 'Somebody That I Used to Know' had become somewhat of an unofficial anthem for the festival... every car was cranking it over their speakers all day, every day... and the question on everyone's lips was whether or not Kimbra would join him on the track. Fortunately, dreams came true... he smashed out an incredible set climaxing with a version of the song with Kimbra on co-lead vocals that people couldn't stop talking about all weekend long."[3] Writing for Digital Spy, Lewis Corner rated the song four stars out of five and described it as "a Bon Iver-styled ballad for the music-buying masses".[4]

Bill Lamb of About.com gave the song the perfect rating of five stars stating, "Pop perfection does not come along often, but Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" is flawless." He also said that while it is not flashy, the song is memorable and destined to be a classic. He explained it reminded him of Human League's "Don't You Want Me" and Sting. He concluded that "Somebody That I Used to Know" will be one of the top songs of 2012.[5] The song has been predicted as a future UK hit by music blog This Must Be Pop.[6] John Watson, who co-manages Gotye with Danny Rogers, said of the single's success: "We've never seen any song make a deeper or more immediate connection with so many people. It's a really special recording and video."[7] On 15 July 2011, it was announced that the song had come third in the 2011 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition.[8]

Commercial performance

"Somebody That I Used to Know" was released on 6 July 2011, debuting at No. 27 on the Australian ARIA Top 50 chart.[9] The single picked up significant radio play, rising to No. 3 after just four weeks on the chart, and reached No. 1 on 15 August 2011.[10] The single was released on 8 August 2011 in Belgium and the Netherlands, reaching No. 1 in both countries after a few weeks. The song went on to be an international success, and by 16 May 2012 had charted in the top 20 in 30 countries with 23 of them being at number one, and a further 6 in the top 10.[1] "Somebody That I Used to Know" first appeared on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart at number 27 in late July 2011. Despite a lack of airplay on commercial stations (triple j had been playing the song regularly prior to its release), the song climbed up to number one on 15 August, becoming Gotye and Kimbra's most successful song. The success was a huge achievement for Kimbra who was not well known in Australia. It also became Gotye's highest peaking single and third to chart in the top 100 after the album's first single "Eyes Wide Open" and his 2007 song "Hearts a Mess". During the number-one run, his album Making Mirrors debuted at number one at the same time, becoming the first Australian since Silverchair's 2006 single "Straight Lines" and its album Young Modern to have both the album and its single to peak at the top spot at the same time. On 3 October, the song became the second-longest-running Australian song (at 8 weeks) tied with Savage Garden's 1997 song "Truly Madly Deeply", behind Daddy Cool's 1971 hit "Eagle Rock" at 10 weeks.[11] The single has since been certified nine times platinum in Australia for sales exceeding 630,000 units.

In Kimbra's home country of New Zealand, the song made a huge debut at No. 4 in late August 2011. The song made it to No. 1 three weeks later, becoming the first Australian song to peak at No. 1 on the charts since Guy Sebastian's single "Who's That Girl" in February 2011.[12] "Somebody That I Used to Know" peaked at No. 1 for 5 weeks and has been certified 4× Platinum. The song debuted on the Irish Singles Chart on 13 January 2012 at #47. In January the single rose to No. 9 on the chart and subsequently hit #1. In the United Kingdom, "Somebody That I Used to Know" spent five non-consecutive weeks at number one. As of May 2012 it had sold over one million copies in the UK,[13] have stayed at the top of the UK Singles Chart for five weeks,[14] and it is currently the best-selling single of 2012 so far.[15] In Belgium, the song spent 12 weeks at number one. As of April 2012, it's the most downloaded song ever in Belgium.[16] As of March 2012, it's the 3rd best-selling download ever in Germany with digital sales between 500,000 and 600,000.[17][18] As of April 2012, it's officially the most successful song in the history of the Dutch charts.[19] As of May 2012, the song had sold 7 million copies worldwide making it the biggest selling single of 2012.[20]

In the United States, the "Somebody that I Used To Know" debuted at number ninety-one on the Billboard Hot 100 on 14 January 2012. In its fifteenth week on the chart, the song rose to number one with sales of 542,000 downloads.[21] It is the fourth-biggest weekly sales since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital sales in 2003.[21][1][22] The song is also the first Australian single to top the Hot 100 since Savage Garden's "I Knew I Loved You" in 2000.[1] After its performance by Matt Bomer and Darren Criss on Glee on 10 April 2012; its performance as a duet by Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone on the eleventh season of American Idol before more than 16 million viewers on 11 April 2012;[23] and Gotye and Kimbra's performance on Saturday Night Live on 14 April 2012, it topped the iTunes Top 100 Singles chart with over 500,000 downloads.[21] On 2 May 2012 the song became the first to reach digital sales of at least 400,000 for three consecutive weeks.[24] A week later, it exceeded download sales of 4 million in the USA.[25] On 9 May 2012 the song had topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for the fourth consecutive week; the Alternative Songs chart for its tenth week, passing Everlast's "What It's Like" (nine weeks in 1998–99) as the longest-reigning No. 1 by a soloist in the chart's 23-year history; and reached No.1 on both Dance/Club Play Songs and Dance/Mix Show Airplay, the first song ever to top these four charts simultaneously.[25] Gary Trust of Billboard indicates: "While 'Somebody' might seem like an odd candidate for club play, considering the original version's sparse, rock-flavored production, the song has won support in dance circles courtesy of remixes by Thin Red Men, Tiesto and others."[25]

On 23 May 2012 the song remained at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a sixth consecutive week,[26][27] thus passing Bruno Mars' "Grenade" (four weeks at No. 1 in January/February 2011) and "Just the Way You Are" (four weeks, October 2010) for the longest reign by a lead solo male artist since Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie", featuring Rihanna, which led for seven weeks in the summer of 2010.[28] At that time, the song reached No.1 on Radio Songs (137 million, up 4%), while remaining atop Digital Songs and On-Demand Songs.[28] It also reached No. 1 on the Pop Songs and Adult Pop Songs airplay charts, and remained No.1 on Alternative Songs for a a 12th week and Dance/Mix Show Airplay for a third week.[29]

Music video

Gotye and Kimbra sing while painted to disguise with the background.

The music video premiered when it was controversially leaked on Take 40 Australia's website. It later premiered on his YouTube channel and had its television premiere on the Australian music show rage on 30 July. The video was directed, produced and edited by Natasha Pincus. The video shows Gotye naked (although he is shown only from the waist up) against a white backdrop. As he sings, a pattern of paint gradually covers his skin and the backdrop via stop motion animation. Kimbra then appears for her verse, also naked and already painted but with her back to the camera. She moves closer to Gotye to sing into his ear.

During the final chorus, Kimbra returns to her original position and the paint on her body gradually disappears, possibly indicating that the two have separated. The music video for the single is well received for its artistic style, picking up 200,000 views in its first two weeks, as well as receiving promotion on Twitter by actor Ashton Kutcher and Katy Perry.[7] As of May 2012, the video has over 211 million views on YouTube. On Christmas Day 2011, it was revealed that the video for "Somebody That I Used To Know" was voted No. 1 in the annual Rage Fifty countdown. Andy Samberg and Taran Killam parodied the video in a Saturday Night Live "digital short" that coincided with Gotye's 14 April 2012 performance on the show.

Cover versions and media appearances

The song has been covered by many artists such as Ingrid Michaelson, Pentatonix, Freak Morice and Sam Tsui.[30] Canadian band Walk off the Earth's version sent to Youtube in January went viral.[31] In February 2012, Rita Ora covered the song at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.[32] A cover by Right The Stars featuring Karmina, which was also uploaded to Youtube, was recommended by Miley Cyrus.[33] Dutch DJ Tiësto did a remix of the song which appears on his album Club Life: Volume Two Miami.[34] Boyce Avenue also covered the song. Matt Bomer and Darren Criss made a cover of the song during Glee's "Big Brother" episode which aired on 10 April 2012. Their performance was well received being described as "the highlight of the episode".[35] It sold 152,000 downloads in its first week and debuted on 18 April 2012 on the Digital Songs chart at No. 10 and the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 26.[36] Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone also covered the song on the eleventh season of American Idol on 11 April 2012.[23] In February 2012, Gotye made his American television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he performed the song.[37] The song has since been featured in the TV series 90210,[38] Gossip Girl,[39] and The Voice.[40] On 16 May 2012, Fun and Paramore's front vocalist Hayley Williams covered the song at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.[41] On May 23, 2012, Internet cartoon band Your Favorite Martian did a cover of the song.[42]
