The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER; Hindi: भारतीय विज्ञान शिक्षा एवं अनुसंधान संस्थान), and the related National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) are a group of premier institutes being created by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) (MHRD), to promote education and research in the sciences. 5 IISER's have been currently planned across the country in the following locations -- Kolkata in West Bengal, Pune in Maharashtra, Mohali in Punjab, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.[1] The financial outlay for each IISER is around 500 crore (US$63 million) for the first five years. The National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010, amends the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, to add a schedule of 5 Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), established in Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal and Thiruvananthapuram.[2][3][4] The NISER is being set up in Bhubaneswar for a slightly higher outlay of 800 crore (US$100 million).[citation needed]

Institutes

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata is functioning from the temporary campus at Mohanpur, a temporary arrangement within the campus of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. Some labs have already been shifted to its permanent campus, over 250 acres (1.0 km2) of land at Haringhata, Kalyani near Kolkata.[5]

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune has started functioning from the National Chemical Laboratory Pune campus. Its permanent campus is under construction on 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land at Pashan, Pune.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali has started functioning from the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration complex in Sector 26 Chandigarh. The foundation stone for its permanent campus was laid in September 2006 by the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. The teaching program has commenced from August 2007.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal has started functioning from the ITI Gas Rahat Building Govindpura Bhopal.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram has started functioning from the College of Engineering, Trivandrum. Land for the permanent campus has been identified at Vithura, within 30 km from the city, near Ponmudi. The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology will be within few kilometers.

National Institute of Science Education and Research began functioning shortly after the foundation stone was laid down on August 28, 2006 by the Prime Minister. Unlike its sister institutions, the IISERs, NISER is being administered by the Department of Atomic Energy. A somewhat larger campus of 300 acres (1.2 km2) is planned.

Admissions

The first batch of around 80 students for integrated Master of Science courses have already been admitted to the institutes at Kolkata and Pune, as well as NISER. Almost double number of students were admitted in the second batch. These students were selected through the highly competitive IIT-JEE. Furthermore, some students were selected from the IISc's KVPY and the Olympiad student list.[6] Students qualifying any of the following examinations will be eligible for admission-

  1. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY)
  2. IITJEE - Those who feature in the regular merit list.

As of 2009 Admissions, the IISERs will not be accepting students who qualify through the olympiad route. Intake will only be through KVPY and IIT-JEE, for the batch of 2009.

From 2010 onwards IISERs are also taking in students who score well in their board exams.
