Dr. Bates Gill holds the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C[1]. He served as a Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies and inaugural Director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies[1][2] at the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C. Gill received his Ph.D. in foreign affairs from the Woodrow Wilson Department of Government and Foreign Affairs, University of Virginia[1].

Gill's previous assignment include directing the East Asia programs at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies of the Monterey Institute of International Studies[2], Monterey, California and also at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. He has held the Fei Yiming Chair in Comparative Politics[2] at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Chinese and American Studies, Nanjing University, China[1].

He has authored three books[1]:
