Revision as of 20:34, 6 February 2004

This page helps responsible users to prevent vandalism from taking place. List a contributor by IP or username, if they have vandalized the Wikipedia.

Note: Please add new alerts at the top of the "Current alerts" list.

Two levels of urgency

If you want to alert everyone, leave the "minor edit" option unchecked. Be careful: this is the default.

If the listing doesn't require a immediate response, please be sure to check the "minor edit" option.

Format

You can use the format under the Current Alerts heading: IP address, pages touched, damage done. For a more comprehensive guide for dealing with different types of vandalism, see Dealing with vandalism.

Blocks and other tools

For a list of currently blocked IPs and usernames and the reason why they were blocked, visit: Special:Ipblocklist. Tools for finding information on an IP number:

Cautions and alternatives

However, please do not label isolated instances of text deletions, replacements or odd additions as VANDALISM unless they seem intentionally overly lewd or offensive. More often than not, this is just a visitor to the site experimenting with how to use it (also see newbie test) -- labeling them as a VANDAL is a sure way of ensuring they will not become contributors. Only add alerts to this page of true VANDALISM such as a systematic attack on several articles. If you suspect an edit may be vandalism but are unsure, don't hesitate to list the edit on Wikipedia:RC patrol where it can be scrutinised by other editors. Above all, please be polite at first and give the person the benefit of the doubt until they prove they deserve otherwise.

If you need help or think someone else does, please leave a note at Wikipedia:clueless newbies.

Please note that deliberate vandalism of this page is likely to lead to you being blocked from editing Wikipedia.

If you disagree with someone's edits, please see the following pages:

Note: Please add new alerts at the top of the "Current alerts" list.

User:24.150.85.30

User:24.150.85.30 - I noticed this guy adding "rainbow is for faggots" to rainbow and removing it a minute later. Then he added racist comment to South Windsor, Connecticut. Would this constitute vandalism - or maybe just testing for waters? - Nilmerg 12:07, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)

207.44.154.35

(User:207.44.154.35 | talk | contributions) has been vandalizing my revisions in World Series of Poker and they have resorted to using inappropriate and foul language against me and keeps changing the page everytime I revert it back to the correct wikipage. Misterrick, 23:55, 12 January, 2004 (UTC).

He's back, 207.44.154.35 has now vandalized Atlantic City, New Jersey claiming that it was commercialized. If he or anyone else does not like the information contained on a Wikipedia page then he should post his dispute on that page's 'Discuss this page' area and not just blatantly delete material without discussing it first. Misterrick 22:36, 20 January, 2004 (UTC)
He's had enough warnings, and responds only with profanity. I've blocked him. Misterrick - post here again if he resurfaces after the block expires. -- Finlay McWalter 22:58, 20 Jan 2004 (UTC)
More vandalism occured by 207.44.154.35 this time on 22 January, 2004 at 02:21 (UTC) again in the Wikipage Atlantic City, New Jersey it was reverted back by Salsa Shark. I could not confirm this but this could be another anonymous web surfing site used to attack Wikipedia. Is there anyway we can easily identify the anonymous web surfing IP addresses and permanently ban or at least make it so that these IP address can only be used with a registered Wiki account and if someone tries to edit a page from an anonymous web surfing service without logging in they will get the following error message: "We're sorry but this IP address is restricted. To access Wikipedia services you must either log into your account or access the Wikipedia website from a non-anonymous IP address. Thank you for your understanding."
I am personally getting tired of having to revert pages back because someone thinks it's funny to continuously vandalize the Wikipedia pages. Misterrick 03:10, 22 January, 2004 (UTC).
Salsa blocked him again (and I did too!). Man, does he kiss his mother with that mouth? -- Finlay McWalter 03:32, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)
207.44.154.35 strikes again (Twice actually) in the Atlantic City, New Jersey wikipage, once at 06:55, 23 January, 2004 (UTC), Page was reverted back by Jiang and then again at 06:57, 23 January, 2004 (UTC), Page was reverted back by Snoyes. Misterrick, 07:12, 22 January, 2004 (UTC).

66.98.130.76

(User:66.98.130.76 | talk | contributions). I'm not sure if this is vandalism per se and would welcome others' opinions. 66.98.130.76 has recently been modifying a considerable number of articles (see contributions) to insert "Her Majesty", "His Royal Highness" etc before every reference to a member of the British Royal Family. Either this is vandalism, or the editor is being extremely pedantic. Either way, I am strongly inclined to revert all his recent edits. Opinions? -- Arwel 02:53, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I saw the same things, and left it alone in deference to what is going on with the Peerage discussion. However, my inclination would have been to revert. Not sure this helps at all. :) Fuzheado 02:55, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Only slightly! :) Thanks for reverting his changes to Caernarfon - his references to the Welsh form of the name being wrong were politically offensive and make me less likely to view his other changes in a charitable light... Arwel 03:03, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)
I reviewed his previous edits, which were all vandalism and quickly reverted, so I decided to revert all these too. If anyone objects, they can of course always be restored... -- Arwel 03:46, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)

66.124.101.229

(User:66.124.101.229 | talk | contributions) Is systematically going through articles relating to Russian Communism (Bolshevik, Joseph Stalin, Leon Troksky etc) and adding anti-semitic comments about the supposed "Jewish-Communist World Empire" conspiracy. This should be a "revert on sight", I think. -- ChrisO 11:31, 14 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Reverse DNS is hlfx64-2a-228.ns.sympatico.ca.

My reply copied from User talk:The Anome: "That's kind of amusing. I noticed a while ago that I had accidentally made the range 142.177.71.0 to 142.177.114.0 instead of to 142.177.114.255. But, I thought, that's only 2% of the range, what are the chances of him being allocated one of those IP addresses? Well the chances are pretty high if he dials up and tries to edit pages a few times per day for a couple of months. The words "get a life" come to mind. I've fixed the range." -- Tim Starling 01:46, Jan 8, 2004 (UTC)

Nasty vandalism of User page Bmills 16:53, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC) and Muriel Victoria's user page. Threatening messages on both - I blocked them. Secretlondon 16:56, Dec 11, 2003 (UTC)

CGd & 139.140.126.134

User:CGd has committed repeated vandalism by creating and editing articles meant to defame. He seems to be acting together with 139.140.126.134 in some sort of tag-team. They've also vandalised at least two user's userpage. Hadal 10:42, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

  • I think some sort of stronger measure is needed. Most of the contributions of this user seem to be just removing valid content from articles and vandalizing others' user pages. Dysprosia 10:48, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
    • You can add 66.183.250.8 to the list. I'd ban them myself, but.. I'm not an admin. Hadal 10:52, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • That's okay, I think I'm going to do so. Minesweeper beat me to it :) Dysprosia 10:52, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
  • I banned the user name because s/he simply would not stop. However, banning usernames is the last thing I want to do here, and I'm not sure how long the user ban should last. So, anyone with more "experience" with such matters should feel free to step in. --Minesweeper 11:42, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
    • I was a little cautious since CGd was sort of on the border between simple vandalism at first, but with this stupid vandalism of user pages, I would have done exactly what you would have done. Dysprosia 11:45, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
  • I've unblocked the account, because I don't think we can permanently block users without some sort of decision from either Jimbo or perhaps the new arbitration committee, especially since CGd has done some stuff other than simple vandalism. I don't disagree with a temporary unilateral block to stop his vandalism streak though. --Delirium 04:11, Dec 9, 2003 (UTC)
  • Note also action of 24.66.94.140, noted above. -- Finlay McWalter 21:04, 13 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Persistent Vandalism

137.94.11.222 / 205.189.49.40

is consistently vandalising Indian independence movement and Subash Chandra Bose with his PoV. The user seems to be ignorant of the usage of his/the article's talk page, and never reads the edit summaries. He has not responded to any request to consider rephrasing or properly substantiating his claims.

He sometimes blanks the article page to post his comments and has consistently in the past used (and has been warned for using) copyrighted material for presenting his case. A case in point is his repeated insistence in adding Swami Vivekananda to the list of Indian freedom leaders, and his blanking the contents of Subash Chandra Bose in the past (Without any substantial evidence, that would at least make it a NPOV dispute and could be dealt with)

There seems to be no way we can communicate to this user and reach a compromise. The user has not made any other worthwhile contribution to wikipedia. I advocate banning this user's IP address. chance 09:15, Dec 3, 2003 (UTC)

  • A consistent vandal, comes back almost everyday to make the same changes. Also has used the IP 205.189.49.40 . Has been vandalising regularly since 17 Nov, the latest being 5 Dec. Is exploring and moving on to newer pages. Jay 22:10, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)
    • 205.189.49.40 has been vandalising Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru in the pattern same as above. Requires immediate blocking. Jay 08:23, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • I see 4 acts of vandalism over 24 hours - how does this "require immediate blocking?" -- Pakaran 08:26, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
        • I don't know. But, 137. shows no signs of tiring. He may not be a vandal who believes in blitzkrieg attacks, but as can be seen from his yesterday's edit in the Indian independence movement page he is madly persistent - saying the same things all over again, and my, what a nauseating plagiarist he is! This fellow cannot even bring himself up to defend what he says, with a few words of his own. I am sick of this attitude. I bet he is waiting for us to tire of him, and let him do all he wants, however stupid that may sound. If this is not persistent vandalism, what is? Something has to be done about this. Maybe a protection request for the pages, and not allow others edit? To protect the articles from one single person? chance 08:44, Dec 11, 2003 (UTC)
        • 137's contribution for 9th Dec was the vandalising of Mahatma Gandhi. Protection of pages won't help as there's no dearth of articles for him to play with. Maybe ban the two IPs and check if he comes up with new ones. Jay 09:12, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • The requests of non-anonymous users who have clearly been investing a lot of time undoing the damage of an anonymous user should be honored as soon as possible. Peak 08:48, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • 137's at it again (on Indian independence movement! Grrrr. The 137.* address is registered to Royal Military College, Ontario, so we'll have to keep an eye out for Good Guys who get banned too. The other address is an ISP. Could someone please block this guy? Gaurav 17:47, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • And.... (Is it me who is getting annoyingly repetitive :-) ? )... again on Dec 12 in the articles, Indian independence movement and Swami Vivekananda. Seriously, when does a user get banned? How more serious should it be than this? One user who has done nothing to wikipedia for the last one month, except defacing the same set of articles still lurks around, quite freely. I would appreciate if some sysop takes note of this and suggest what should be done. It has been nearly two weeks, and nobody seems willing to check this user :-( chance 05:22, Dec 15, 2003 (UTC)

137.94.11.222 has been blocked. --mav 05:36, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

No longer blocked and he is back with his antics again in Indian independence movement. Has he been removed from Blocked IPs? I dont see the IP there. chance 04:55, Dec 19, 2003 (UTC)
137.94.11.222 is still at it. Hadal 20:22, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Repeated Vandalism by 12.64.etc/12.65.etc

Over a long period of time several hoaxes have been added to Wikipedia from these IP ranges. Many of these hoax articles seem perfectly reasonable at first glance, often mixing facts in with the fiction. One of their favorite targets seems to be LeAnn Rimes. Some have been in concert with User:199.248.201.253. I am not sure if they are from the same user, but they appear to be. Examples (very incomplete):

I am posting it here so that hopefully more people will see this. --Maximus Rex 08:17, 20 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Someone needs to put this entire class C network on permanent ban. Repeated vandalism, all the same style, also many deleted pages that were hoaxes. First, the IPs that have histories (I checked every IP on the subnet). Daniel Quinlan 20:45, Dec 11, 2003 (UTC)

add to the mix these pages which are deleted (or not, someone is restoring them against policy to delete obvious vandalism)
