Solar Millennium, based in Erlangen, Germany, is a globally active company in the renewable energy sector, particularly in the area of solar thermal power plants. Solar Millennium specializes all aspects of parabolic trough power plants, from the project development to the turn-key construction and operation of the plants.[1]

In May 2008, Solar Millennium won the prestigious Energy Globe Award, for the initiation and development of Europe's first parabolic trough power plants, the Spanish Andasol power plants. The jury also selected the Andasol projects as the winning national project for Spain.[2]

The Andasol projects are a group of three solar thermal power plants in Andalusia, southern Spain. The first project has been under construction since 2006 and goes into operation in 2008, the second will be connected to the grid in 2009 and construction on the third project is to start later in 2008. Each solar power plant will supply environmentally-friendly electricity to up to 200,000 people, cutting down on 149,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year compared to a modern coal fired plant. These are the first parabolic trough power plants in Europe.[2]

Further projects with a capacity of several hundred megawatts are currently being planned worldwide, with the focus on Spain, the United States, China and North Africa. The company is also developing solar chimney power plants with the aim of making this technology ready for the market.[1]
