A Häkim in Turkmenistan (derived from the Arabic word Arabic: حاكم for "governor") refers to the head of a regional and/or local executive authority in the Government of Turkmenistan.[1] The five regions (welaýatlar) headed by Häkims include the following: Ahal, Balkan, Dashoguz, Lebap and Mary. The capital city of Ashgabat has provincial legal status and therefore is headed by an Häkim.[2] Within cities, boroughs are also headed by a presidentially appointed mayor.
