Pearl V Puri (born 10 July 1989) is an actor and model.[1] He is known for playing Abeer in Phir Bhi Na Maane...Badtameez Dil, Mahir in Naagin 3 and Raghbir in Bepanah Pyaar

Early life

Pearl V Puri was born on 10 July 1989 in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, India into a Hindu Khatri family to Vipin Puri and Pummy Puri.[1] He has an elder sister Reet Vohra aka Quety Puri. Puri started his schooling at Maharishi Vidya Mandir Public School, Chhindwara. After a few years his family shifted to Agra, Uttarpradesh where he was enrolled at Raghendra Swarup Public School.

Puri was inspired to be an actor after his ex girlfriend was a hardcore fan of Shah Rukh Khan. His father wanted him to join their family business but his mother supported his decision of becoming an actor. He started off his career as a model and appeared in several commercials for various brands like Maruti Ritz, Fair One Cream, Pizza Hut. After a period of initial struggle when he found success as an actor, his father forgive him.[2]

Puri's father passed away in October 2020 following a heart attack.[3]

Personal life

Puri was in a 9 year-long relationship with a girl from his hometown Agra. However the couple broke up after he went to pursue his acting career.[4] In 2015, Puri and actress Asmita Sood were in a relationship however they both parted ways in 2016.[5]

Career

2013–2017: Initial struggles

Puri made his acting debut on television with a supporting role in the love-triangle Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat on Sony TV produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions in 2013 as Ajay Tiwari.[1] In 2014, Puri acted in Colors TV's Rangrasiya playing a cameo role of Samir, co-starring alongside Ashish Sharma and Sanaya Irani.

In 2015, he got his first leading role in Saurabh Tewari Films' musical romantic drama Phir Bhi Na Maane...Badtameez Dil on Star Plus opposite Asmita Sood as Abeer Malhotra, a successful charming rockstar.[6] Although the show ran for just 5 months, he gained recognition for his role as Abeer that earned him a Best Fresh New Face (Male) nomination at Indian Telly Awards.[7] The show initially ended on 19 September[8], however the show came back on Hotstar and ran until 18 November.[9]

In January 2016, Puri signed Swastik Pictures' television show Meri Saasu Maa on Zee TV wherein he was cast as Satyendra Sharma opposite Hiba Nawab.[10] In May 2016, he joined the cast of Yash A Patnaik's fantasy TV series Naagarjuna – Ek Yoddha on Life OK as the simple and innocent Arjun Shastri, a garage worker opposite Pooja Banerjee.[11] The show ended in January 2017.[12] In 2017, he played an cameo role appearance in Gul Khan's Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? 3 playing the role of Sushant.

2018–present: Immense popularity and break

In 2018, he found his biggest and highly appreciated break with the third season of Ekta Kapoor's successful supernatural franchise Naagin. His portrayal of Mahir Sehgal/Mihir Sippi and chemistry with co-actress Surbhi Jyoti gained a lot of attention and love, making him a household name.[13] He won the Best Actor Male (Critics) category at Gold Awards and received nominations for Best Actor Male (Popular) and Best Onscreen Jodi (Popular) at Indian Telly Awards.[14] The show achieved high TRPs and ended in May 2019 after 104 episodes, becoming the longest season of the franchise.[15]

In 2019, Puri made his discography debut with Peerh Meri co-starring Anita Hassanandani.[16] He participated in Khatra Khatra Khatra and the fifth season of Kitchen Champion, both of which aired on Colors TV.[17][18] He also appeared in the fourth season of Box Cricket League.[19]

In June 2019, Puri joined hands with Kapoor again for the romantic mystery thriller Bepanah Pyaar on Colors TV wherein he starred as the depressed and excessively alcoholic Raghbir Malhotra alongside Aparna Dixit and Ishita Dutta.[20] The show went off air in February 2020.

In 2020, he featured in the music videos Teri Aankhon Mein and Teri Aankhon Mein Dance Cover.[21][22] In September 2020, he started shooting for the second season of Zee TV supernatural show Brahmarakshas, his third consecutive collaboration with Kapoor, in which he enacts the main lead Angad Mehra opposite Nikki Sharma.[23] The series premiered in November 2020, but went off air within five months in April 2021 due to low TRPs.[24]

Controversies

On 4 June 2021, Puri was arrested by Mumbai Police after a complaint was filed against him alleging that he molested and raped a minor girl around two years ago.[25][26] On 5 June, a Vasai court has sent him to judicial custody.[27] The alleged victim's mother has issued a statement claiming that Puri is innocent and that the whole case is false and that the case was filed by the her estranged husband to get the custody of their daughter.[26] On 11 June, the court has rejected his bail petition.[28] On 15 June, the court granted bail.[29]

In 2018, Puri was ranked first in Times of India's Most Desirable Men on TV List.[30] He was also ranked 26th in The 50 Most Desirable Men List.[31] He was ranked 20th in the 2019 TV Personality List by Biz Asia.[32].
