SPI follow-up: KevinPR82
This is follow up to SPI case you closed. I would have taken this to User:Ad Orientem, but that editor retired. Because there were other issues (what to do with standing cases when an admin retires, plus long-term edit warring, disruptive unsourced editing, and WP:IDHT), I tried ANI, but failed to get a coherent response. The SPI subject did respond promptly with an unsigned post from another IP in the SPI case. Despite a clear warning to avoid mixing static IP and account edits which was received a half-hearted response, there was an ongoing mix with IP and logged-in edits over the following months: account and IP. Not all, but many of the logged-in edits were on partially protected pages. My threshold for action was reached with the account repeating the same factually incorrect (basic arithmatic) edit: IP (October)-account (December) that had been reverted by another editor. The IP that replied on ANI, had not made other edits between the SPI and the ANI, but has only made one unsourced edit that has been reverted at Chain letter. It follows the same theme as prior unsourced edits from a defunct IP ([1], [2]) from the SPI case. That IP had been reported for sockpuppetry and there was an unsigned IP reply that argued against the need for sources since some unsourced edits had not been reverted. I hope I am not out of line coming to you. If I am, please refer me to the appropriate venue. BiologicalMe (talk) 18:56, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- BiologicalMe, acknowledging that I've seen this, but it's been a busy couple of days. I'll try to take care of this tomorrow. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:54, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. This is a case measured in edits per week, so there is no rush. Thank you for for the status update. BiologicalMe (talk) 01:09, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Could you take a look at...
this, in your capacity as an SPI clerk? My concern is that the reported sock is editing articles which the master has been topic banned from. Thanks, Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:33, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- Beyond My Ken, replied at the SPI and on the editor in question's talk page, and if they don't give a satisfactory answer there will be indefs. GeneralNotability (talk) 02:07, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:10, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Bizarre comments
The User:EnPassant is attempting to claim that I am the subject of the article and is referring to me this way here. You cannot see his username, but the comment is at the bottom with the chess piece characters. He also claimed to delete material in articles. Dr42 (talk) 22:00, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not just attempting, I'm openly stating my suspicion. And yes, I deleted the puffery [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10] that you spammed all over Wikipedia. ♟♙ (talk) 22:27, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm apparently late to the party (seeing as how you're CU-blocked), but I consider myself far too involved in this situation to act as a neutral admin. Ask someone else. GeneralNotability (talk) 23:13, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 19
News and updates associated with user scripts from the past month (December 2020).
Hello everyone and welcome to the 19th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:
Scripts Submit your new/improved script here
|
- Voting in the m:Community Wishlist Survey 2021 is ongoing until December 21, 2020. There are 15 proposals in the "bots and gadgets" category that may be of interest.
- A script to help list discussions at WP:ANRFC (request)
- A script to allow undoing edits despite conflicting intermediary edits (request)
- ...and many more, all available at Wikipedia:User scripts/Requests
- The Watchlist Expiry feature worked on by the Community Tech team has been enabled on Wikipedia. For scripts that include watching or unwatching pages, developers may want to update their code to take advantage of the new functionality. See the documentation on mediawiki.org.
- As noted in the prior issue, Enterprisey's links-in-logs script has now been implemented as part of MediaWiki core. By my count, this is his third script that was replaced by implementing the code in MediaWiki core or an extension, along with link-section-edits and abusefilter-hide-search. Additionally, his reply-link script is being converted in part to mw:Extension:DiscussionTools. Are there any other scripts that might be worth integrating directly in MediaWiki? Thoughts would be welcome at Wikipedia talk:Scripts++.
As always, if anyone else would like to contribute, help is appreciated. Stay safe, and happy holidays! --DannyS712 (talk) 00:19, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
Wow
Wow, Pudeo has a good nose. I'm developing a "beginner's nose" for dirty laundry but this amount of research is several orders of magnitude above what I will ever see myself doing, not to mention the presentation. I've only been following SPIs for a few months and don't follow all of them, but I don't think I've seen anything that comes close to this level of digging except maybe for persistent, known, last-sock-was-fairly-recent LTA cases. In a word, just... wow.
The case is marked "closed" so I'm not going to add to the SPI, but it looks like Mathpianist93 is the new "oldest account," from 2006. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 15:19, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Davidwr: Sometimes there are good tips who to check for... Still, it is pretty tedious and if you are wrong, it's been a complete waste of time. I recommend going to a user's contribs, setting it to 500 -- then modifying 500 to 5,000 or so in your browser's URL. The software allows you to see 5,000 of their contribs on the same page, and if you open both users' contribs in different tabs, it's fairly easy to CTRL+F for similarities. I find that more useful than the editor interaction tool. --Pudeo (talk) 17:00, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Pudeo: that makes sense once you have a sockpuppeteer in mind, but I'm very confused/amazed how you thought of LoM in the first place? Matching "trying to get people blocked and edits in the China topic area" to a sock from 6 years ago is an incredible deduction. I figured you maybe remembered them from prior interactions but afaics you never interacted with LoM when they were around? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 17:45, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
I want you to unblock DooksFoley147
I thought I was logged in and only realised after I sent the message. Can you unblock that for me ?. 92.251.219.191 (talk) 00:25, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- You may request an unblock on your talk page. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:35, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
I saw I made a mistake as I thought I was logged in as dooksfoley147 can you unblock this for me so I can log in ?. 92.251.219.191 (talk) 00:35, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- You are able to log in, but you can only edit your talk page at this time. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:39, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
I think this is very unfair I don't know how to request an unblock on a talkpage ?. 92.251.219.191 (talk) 00:43, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Per the block message:
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page:
GeneralNotability (talk) 00:46, 21 December 2020 (UTC){{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
Did I put the appeal in the right place ?. How will I know if it is lifted ?. 92.251.219.191 (talk) 01:18, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you!
Thanks so much for your help in getting a page locked to prevent vandalism for me, my client and I both appreciate the work you do! TheStarchildForever (talk) 16:33, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- TheStarchildForever, I haven't the faintest idea what you're referring to, but I certainly did not protect any pages to do you or your client (whoever that is) any favors. GeneralNotability (talk) 17:22, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- TheStarchildForever, I have previously pointed this out to you elsewhere, but could you please add a conflict of interest disclosure to your userpage? Thanks. Blablubbs|talk 17:48, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
\
You were listed as the admin who locked a page, I was merely trying to thank someone for their hard work on Wikipedia. Sorry, I guess. TheStarchildForever (talk) 01:53, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 11 January 2021.
Recent changes
- The
{{citation needed}}
template shows when a statement in a Wikipedia article needs a source. If you click on it when you edit with the visual editor there is a popup that explains this. Now it can also show the reason and when it was added. [11]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
Future changes
- You can propose and discuss what technical improvements should be done for geographic information. This could be coordinates, maps or other related things.
- Some wikis use LanguageConverter to switch between writing systems or variants of a language. This can only be done for the entire page. There will be a
<langconvert>
tag that can convert a piece of text on a page. [12] - Oversighters and stewards can hide entries in Special:AbuseLog. They can soon hide multiple entries at once using checkboxes. This works like hiding normal edits. It will happen in early January. [13]

That sockpuppet
The Lord of the Rings fantasy sockpuppet. So, a big pattern of the CA version was to edit articles pertaining to Tibet, with Chinese POV. The Lieutenant version also edited Tibet pages, as the last 50 contributions depict. Both CA and the Lieutenant edited Tibetan Autonomous Region, and here's a "Tibet" search for CA [14] and a "Tibet" search for Lieutenant [15]. In the notes of the investigation, there's a question of whether there are active sockpuppet accounts still being used by whatever the current user name is: I think Chucky (a nickname) might still be here. The Lieutenant did work here, while a search on CA says that version didn't, but the page's most recent repeat edits are massive POV changes [16] almost verbatim from before, and something's strange here [17]... Chucky? Note that the reverts occurred about a month before CA's indef. Thought you might be interested. Pasdecomplot (talk) 22:50, 23 December 2020 (UTC) 23:30, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Pasdecomplot, I'm inclined to believe the CheckUser finding of "no obvious sockpuppets". Comparing CA with AdoTang, I don't see anything more than a shared point of view, and obviously Tibet is an area where a lot of people with a strong opinions show up. Flyingcolored
Hey there, I just blocked Flyingcolouredbutterfly for 2 weeks for persistent overlinking, most recently here, but prior to that, here. While I feel justified for the block, I didn't immediately recognise their name as the editor I'd previously come to you about, and it was my intention to avoid blocking them directly. Thus, I have removed the block. They were indeffed at Commons for copyright infringement, and this persistent effort to go out of their way to make bad edits, along with their deafening silence, is starting to feel an awful lot like trolling to me. I'd appreciate if you'd consider adminning here, please. Thank you. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 00:08, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Cyphoidbomb! I've reinstated the block you made; as an uninvolved admin I think two weeks off for disruptive editing (particularly the lack of communication) is appropriate. GeneralNotability (talk) 01:19, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks mate. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 01:20, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

locksupressed?
Regarding this edit, what does "locksupressed" mean? Is that different from glocked? -- RoySmith (talk) 21:32, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
- RoySmith, it's globally locked + user's existence globally oversighted (if you try to look up the users, it's as if they no longer exist - centralauth says "no such user," all of their contribs have had the username suppressed). It's fairly rare - either egregiously offensive usernames, BLP vios, or outing. In this case, I suspect it was that first criterion - if you look at the usernames that were sent down the memory hole, they're amalgamations of the names of serial killers. GeneralNotability (talk) 21:42, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
- GeneralNotability, Thanks. Yeah, I did notice the "no such user", but wasn't sure what to make of it. -- RoySmith (talk) 22:19, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
