This is a collection of information about a user nicknamed MascotGuy. See Wikipedia talk:Long term abuse/MascotGuy for discussion. Unlike most people, he rarely if ever edits Wikipedia, deriving sufficient amusement from simply creating usernames and waiting to be blocked. He will create one account and that primary account will be used to create other accounts.
Usernames
This user's account names are usually random and garbled phrases; multiple word account names rarely use CamelCase apart from the "Vision" series described below. Despite the seemingly random nature of this user's choice of names, virtually all of the sockpuppets follow the same naming conventions.
As a result, abuse filter 159, "Mascot Guy Sock Candidates" was created to alert other editors to his presence. The filter can be accessed here, though it was disabled in March 2013.
The most common variations include:
- "_____ Guy" (by far the most common variation, especially since being referred to as "MascotGuy")
- "_____ & _____ Guy"
- "_____ de (la) _____" (may or may not use "la" in the name)
- "_____ vs. _____"
- "_____ 5000"
- "_____ Vision 5000" (in which "Vision" is combined with a CamelCase such as "PowerVision," "MightyVision," "MicroVision," etc.)
- "_____'s Blues"
- "_____'s Glowball"
- "_____'s Killers"
Less common variations include:
- "_____ Bully"
- "_____ Clef"
- "_____ Goofs"
- "_____ the Great"
- "Li'l _____"
- "Mr. _____"
- "Dr. _____"
- "_____ Star"
- "_____vision"
- "_____fighters"
- "_____the Maid"
- "_____'s Nightmare"
- "_____ in 7-11"
- "_____apalooza
- "_____ Greatest Chases"
- "_____ of _____"
At least two early sockpuppets were the e-mail addresses of what may have been relatives, including his mother which in turn led to a single, successful e-mail contact, listed below. Newer sockpuppets ending with the "Guy" suffix occasionally refer to oldies singles.
Other notes
- IP addresses used by this editor mostly originate in San Diego, California, USA.
- An editor stated that they had contacted MascotGuy's mother, who said he was autistic. A discussion at Myfonts.com, another site where he has caused problems, has messages from a user claiming to be a former teacher who Googled this user's likely real name, as did the Wikipedia editor who discovered the Myfonts post. The teacher claims to verify this user's autism, comparing him to Rain Man and further claiming that his behavior is this user's way of communicating "on his own terms."
Another user claiming to be his mother signed on to the Myfonts discussion to explain her position. According to the poster, Mascot Guy is indeed a savant with a typing speed of 90 wpm, an extensive knowledge of internet access and a "love of Wikipedia." He recognizes the fact that his sockpuppets are blocked upon discovery; he allegedly resets his computer and IP address by simply shutting off all the circuit breakers in the house. Explanations as to the level of Mascot Guy's long-term damage and abuse were answered rather defensively; the poster claimed that she would not take away his "link to the outside world." and that she had "other worries" which include his tendency to walk out into busy traffic without looking and his ongoing treatment for diabetes. Given Mascot Guy's non-communication over the years, it is likely that this poster is indeed his mother, although no proof is available.
To his credit, MascotGuy has never been abusive toward other editors either by direct attacks or by the creation of insulting usernames; all of his usernames are well within Wikipedia's username conventions, if rather unusual. A recent exception may be that of a July 2009 sockpuppet named "Dr. Powblock's BlockVision 5000" and a secondary creation by that same account, "Invasion of the Mascots", as well as a March 2011 account named "Attack of the Evil MascotGuy", which seem to acknowledge that this user does in fact know he is creating problems. The sheer number of accounts he makes coupled with willful, wanton misinformation and his apparent access to multiple computers and IPs make this very persistent individual a major irritant who creates a massive amount of work for Wikipedia users.
- Per this MfD, tagging of sockpuppets with the {{sockpuppet}} template is not recommended.
