In Interstellar, a Ranger is a NASA SSTO spaceplane designed for interplanetary missions.
Ther are three types of Ranger used by NASA: the first one is the Ranger Test Ship, used by Joseph Cooper during tests and, according to the novelization, was designed for tests of missions to Mars; the second one was produced in fourteen units, used during the Lazarus and Endurance missions and the third one is used in the twenty-second century by NASA, that is now only a spacecraft manufacturer.
