Ullens is descended on his mother's side from the jurist Guillaume Wittouck and the distilling and sugar magnate Félix Wittouck. In 1955, Guy Ullens married Micheline Franckx. They had four children.

In 1999, Guy Ullens married Myriam Lechien, a Belgian entrepreneur. Together, they are heavily committed to a number of philanthropic projects around the world.[2]

Education & Career

After studying law at the Catholic University of Louvain, Ullens obtained an MBA at Stanford University in 1960. He then created Eurocan Belgium, one of the first metal packaging manufacturers in Europe.

In 1973 he joined the management of the family business, the Tirlemont Refinery. He played a central role in the company's expansion into Asia.[3] In 1989, the Tirlemont Refinery was sold to German company, Südzucker.[4] Proceeds from the sale were reinvested in the food business via the holding company Artal Luxembourg, with Guy Ullens becoming president the same year.[5]

In 1999, following a change in strategy, Artal entered the textile industry (Albert)[6] and took control of Weight Watchers International, a global company dedicated to the development of weight loss food program.[7]

Philanthropic projects and sponsorship

In 2000, Guy Ullens retired from business to devote himself to philanthropic projects with his wife, Myriam Ullens.

In 2002 they set up the Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation.[8] One of the first purposes of the Foundation was to sponsor and organize exhibitions of Chinese art, and to lend pieces to museums and culturual centers around the world.[9]

Guy and Myriam Ullens helped children in Nepal by establishing orphanages and two intensive care centers for children with malnutrition.[10] They also set up the Ullens School Kathmandu, partnering with the Bank Street College of Education to train Nepalese teachers.[11] The Ullens School Kathmandu is the only school in Nepal to be IB certified.[12]

When Myriam Ullens was diagnosed with cancer in 2003,[13] Guy Ullens took over the development of the Nepal project.

Private collection of Chinese Art

In 1980, Guy Ullens initiated a collection of Chinese art that is now one of the worlds largest with nearly 1,500 pieces.[14] The Ullens collection is managed by the Guy and Myriam Ullens Foundation. In 2007, the Foundation established the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in the Dashanzi district of Beijing,.[15][16] UCCA is the first private cultural institution in China dedicated to contemporary art and offers temporary exhibitions[17]
