Bold text Basic history:
About 12,500 years ago, while the land bridge still existed and the oceans where shallower , was the end of the last ice age. back then it was much, much colder and there were different types of plants and animals than there are now. The end of the ice age meant a decline in the population of large game animals like the mastadon and wooly mammoth. As the landscape became warmer and warmer, caribou migrated north to colder temperature.
Bold text Food
Kanawha Valley people needed the same things we do today. food, water, shelter, clothing, and leadership. The people hunted large game animals, like the wooly mammoth and mastadons. They used spears, with large clovis points knapped from flint. They also hunted smaller animals ranging from deer and bears to rabbits and birds. They also gathered nuts and edible plants. They travelled alot because they follow the animals that they hunted. Later on, they fished from the river.
Bold text Change
When the mastadons and mammoths died out, and the climate warmed, they had to change. the large game and caribou were replaced by an abundance of deer. instead of following their prey, ther stayed in more permenent homes and let the deer come to them. Because there were no more mammoth or mastadon, they no longer needed such large points, so eventually the points became smaller and along with it a new way to hunt as well.
Bold text The Atlatl
The atlatl was a revolutionary advancement in hunting. The tool itself muche resembles a modern dog toy. The spear was attached to a lever, and placed parallel of the lever. The lever would be flung foreward and the spear hurled with much more force and accuracy.
Bold text Houses
The people lived in wigwams, which were constructed from sticks. The poles were stuck into the ground, bent and tied together at the top to produce a domed frame. Next, pannels of sticks lashed together to make walls.
Bold text Later on
They discovered seeds and soon grew there own crops, still hunting and fishing, but not as much. Along with it, they made the bow and arrow. they did not normally live in large villages but later some groups banded together and formed larger villages, which the construction of was planned. the cities were built on teraces beside the river. they no longer grew crops but fished freshwater fish out of the river. sadly, these people died out.
