Speculation

I've removed a dubious paragraph (below) which is based on speculation and has existed for almost two years without a citation.68.1.135.35 (talk) 23:11, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Tackling the problem of ghetto taxes is difficult. For instance, high-interest-rate loans are more likely to be taken by people on lower incomes; however, a study has shown that capping interest rates results in reduced credit availability for those people who most need it. This may make the problem worse.[citation needed]

Rename

The name is misleading; the article should be named properly and should have a redirect from the slang term. -128.61.83.190 (talk)

I agree in principal, but the term is widely used. [1] And I can't think of a more suitable replacement. Mnnlaxer (talk) 15:02, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a separate page for poor tax. A ghetto tax is a thing. It is based on where you live. Poor taxes include ghetto taxes, but there are more, such as late payments because hourly workers are likely paid weekly, or more commonly bi-weekly, and didn't make quite enough. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdblick (talkcontribs) 15:30, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Examples

The examples section says:

"Grocery stores in poor neighbourhoods are smaller than in large neighbourhoods"

It nearly seems like a sleight of hand to compare poor neighborhoods with *large* neighborhoods. Shouldn't it be poor vs wealthy areas instead of poor vs large areas? LegendLength (talk) 11:21, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Transportation

it's not only about distances
we in poor countries have high customs duties and high local prices for used cars
for instance, importing 7 year or older car to Russia will cost you 5 euro for each cm3 of its engine
and Chile forbids to import used cars with exception of Rapa-Nui and one or two mainland regions — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.94.177.68 (talk) 18:18, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Samuel Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness

Although the concept of Vimes' Theory was introduced in fiction, and Vimes himself is fictional, it is an accurate theory of this phenomenon and comes along with a useful illustrative example of it. I feel this should be mentioned here. Also, " Samuel Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness" and "Vimes' Boots Situation" should redirect here. 2601:642:C481:4640:0:0:0:3561 (talk) 04:28, 25 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ghetto taxCost of poverty – "Cost of poverty" seems like the more popular name that is used in sources and in common parlence. PhotographyEdits (talk) 18:42, 13 August 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. Favonian (talk) 18:41, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
