Template editor

User:Buidhe

I not infrequently find myself closing WP:Requested moves involving protected templates. If granted this permission, I would use it exclusively to complete moves for discussions that I closed; otherwise I have no interest in technical template editing. Obviously, it is not appropriate to boldly move a template protected page which is why these end up as requested move discussions even if not controversial. As it stands, I have made several requests for template protected pages at WP:RM/TR, after closing move discussions, and all the technical requests have all been granted. Examples: [1][2][3][4][5] (t · c) buidhe 04:16, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Standard Guidelines review:
  1. Green tickY (guideline: >1 year, applicant: 9)
  2. Green tickY (guideline: >1000 edits, applicant: ~86k)
  3. Green tickY (guideline: >150 template edits, applicant: ~2k)
  4. Green tickY (guideline: !<6 months, applicant: NA)
  5. Red XN (guideline: 3 sandboxes, applicant: ~0)
  6. Red XN (guideline: 5 requests, applicant: ~0)
I know this is a non-standard reason for requesting, but I thought I'd run the numbers anyway. Primefac (talk) 12:15, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Are there any special steps that have to be taken to make sure a template move doesn't (temporarily) break anything? --Trialpears (talk) 06:50, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
On the one hand, template redirects should (in theory) still keep everything working. However, if a double-redirect does not get resolved then it can break things. There are also issues if a Module is looking for a specific template (I'm unlikely to forget this saga any time soon). In either case someone needs to make sure any potential mess is cleaned up and/or properly seen to, and I'll be honest I would much prefer it be Buidhe than some of those that auto-process RM/TR requests. I guess this is a long-winded way of saying that I'm on the fence but leaning towards accepting. Primefac (talk) 12:24, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was intending it to be a question for Buidhe to make sure they are aware that problems can arise from template moves and that it's important to fix double redirects, but I should have been more clear about that. I would trust Buidhe with template moves since they have experience with consensus and are aware of potential issues. One thing I would add to the list of possible problems are that bot related templates often break when moved requiring the template name to be update in the code. --Trialpears (talk) 12:55, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For whatever it's worth: I think buidhe is well-honed, and very active in RMs and RfC closures; I'd endorse this request, if that counts for anything. The only critical thing with templates is to update double redirects (unlike normal redirects, where it doesn't hurt that much to just let the bot update them, letting double redirects stand for templates will break a lot of transclusions). It's also a good idea to update any templatestyles paths etc, but I think the extension is capable of following redirects so those aren't exactly as 'critical'. There are edge cases, eg Primefac's example of modules using getArgs, but I can't think of others off the top of my head (on that note, I wonder if it might be a good idea to document these somewhere). • @Buidhe: so going over the discussion above - I don't think there is an issue that you would purposefully misuse this expanded access, so I'm leaning "yes" on this based on your long tenure, move experience, and AGF. The primary question is about technical competence that may run in to the primary use case you have. If you run in to RM's for templates that have integrations with things like styles/modules/etc - what would you do? — xaosflux Talk 13:50, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't feel confident handling modules, so I would ask an experienced template editor for help. Otherwise, I will be careful to manually resolve double redirects to avoid any problems there. (t · c) buidhe 17:08, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Done from the discussion and responses above, I'm convinced that Buidhe will only use this appropriately and within their technical skill limit. — xaosflux Talk 17:51, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
