Discussion re buggy auto-generating short descriptions[edit]

I started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Short description § Bug report: Template code to auto-generate short descriptions fails to work. Maybe it should have been better placed here. If anyone is familiar with "coding" inside templates, please check out the discussion. Thank you.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 20:31, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sidebar to horizontal navbox question[edit]

Hello. I have a question. Can a sidebar be turned into a horizontal navbox? If so, is there guidance about it? I noticed the sidebar in the article Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam is causing issues because there is a table that causes a big unsightly blank space before it. A horizontal navbox would better serve the page. Sincerely, --Thinker78 (talk) 20:08, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The syntax is pretty similar so it's just changing one template type into another. I will note that Template:Vietnam topics already exists. I will also note that changing a sidebar into a navbox to fix a single article is not the right way to go about doing so. Primefac (talk) 20:11, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I don't know how such templates work, so my idea was turning the sidebar into a navbox only for the article at hand. Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 20:16, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Input requested[edit]

There is a discussion that may be of your interest, at Template talk:GeoTemplate#Splitting Global/Trans-national services. Your input is welcomed. Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 23:15, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Operant conditioning[edit]

Would someone mind taking a look at {{Operant conditioning}}? It looks like someone trying to create a chart did so as a template instead of an image. I noticed this after checking on some other stuff in the article Reinforcement. The template is being used in Reinforcement#Operant conditioning and it's so wide that it pretty much takes up the entire section. This was a question asked about the template's width on its talk page, but nobody seems to have responded and nobody else seems to have commented on why an image needs to be a template. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:22, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is how {{chart}} works; I suppose you could bury a background image and then float wikilinks above it like people do with pinned maps, but since this is a template that makes flowcharts I'm not really seeing the need to go to that much extra effort... so I'm not really sure if there's anything "wrong" with the template itself. I was looking at this template and noticed that the bottom row (Events) isn't displayed. Does it also look like this for you guys or is it just me? Why might something like this happen? BaduFerreira (talk) 18:12, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The list9 parameter didn't have an equals so it was behaving like a positional parameter which the template just ignored. I fixed it here. Aidan9382 (talk) 18:14, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. I completely missed that. Thank you for the fix and the quick response! BaduFerreira (talk) 18:19, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

US state during World War II manual infobox[edit]

Is there an existing infobox template that covers the usage of the manual template used in Arizona during World War II, California during World War II, Nevada during World War II, and New Mexico during World War II? Gonnym (talk) 14:51, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll keep looking, but based on how these infoboxes are being used I would say {{Infobox military operation}} isn't unreasonable, even if not really the best option. Primefac (talk) 15:21, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, these infoboxes contain almost no information, so I wouldn't cry over outright removal. Primefac (talk) 15:26, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean hell, {{Infobox event}} would work. Primefac (talk) 15:28, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Someone working on manual infoboxes 😭
Anyway, kinda agree with Primefac, I'd be inclined to nix them personally. Izno (talk) 17:15, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've replaced one with {{Infobox event}} - Arizona during World War II. But yeah, using it seems a bit off as this isn't really an event. Gonnym (talk) 17:20, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Much of the information in the infobox is in the "free" fields, which is a hint that the infobox doesn't fit well. I would advocate for deleting the infoboxes on these articles. — hike395 (talk) 22:41, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:N/A interfering with data-sort-value?[edit]

At the moment, Template:N/A seems to interact poorly with table cells that specify their own data-sort-value, as the template sets data-sort-value="". This is a problem on List of most commonly challenged books in the United States, where the extensive use of the template means that the unlisted books sort to the top, rather than the bottom. Is the template being misused on that page, or should the user be able to define the sort value in the template? EnronEvolvedMy Talk Page 12:26, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not necessarily misused, just not used ideally. {{n/a}} has a |sort= parameter, which I suspect could be set to something like |sort=101 to get it to sort under everything else. Primefac (talk) 22:07, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know about that parameter. Is it documented anywhere? I couldn't find it in that template's documentation. EnronEvolvedMy Talk Page 12:24, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately that entire template family uses the same documentation, and if any of the templates don't have that parameter it might mean that we give bad advice. Honestly I'm not overly thrilled with said /doc (I think it's too complex and wordy) so I might see about editing it and possibly adding some #switch statements that will trigger to show parameters for the templates that use them...
