Article Title

Can somebody please change the name of this article? "Group of Monotheism and Jihad in West Africa" would be better. Tawhid means monotheism. "Oneness" is just incomprehensible. See Al-Qaeda_in_Iraq for a similar organization's name. Jokkmokks-Goran (talk) 18:05, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, as in all things Wikipedia, we need to follow coverage of the group in secondary sources. Right now "Group of Monotheism and Jihad in West Africa" gets zero Google hits, whereas the current translation is used by many news organizations. If the balance changes, though, I'll be happy to join you in renaming it. Khazar2 (talk) 19:02, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

what about adopting a linguistically defensible version like monotheism and jihad or tawhid and jihad, but acknowledging that press also calls this group unicite et djihad in french or oneness and jihad in english. if wiki standards don't allow the citation of variants, i guess that's the way it is. but it seems that the goal should be accuracy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.97.128.192 (talk) 20:22, 25 May 2012 (UTC) sorry, but one more point: french press regularly refers to the group as unicite et djihad. see jeune afrique for example. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.97.128.192 (talk) 20:24, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that we have a policy against original research. Since we don't know each other's qualifications, it's not practical for us to decide that we have a better translation abilities than the BBC or New York Times. It's also important that we use the most commonly-used name for the group so that it can be easily understood. My suggestion would be to start by pointing out the error you've found to news organizations; once their coverage begins to change, ours will change to follow suit.
