The Information Centre for Foreign Language Research (German: Informationszentrum für Fremdsprachenforschung, IFS), an institute of the Philipps University of Marburg, has existed since 1969. Its main purpose is the collection and description of literature and research projects on foreign language research and teaching. With this focus as regards content the IFS is unique in Germany. Since 1998 Frank G. Königs has been the Head of the Information Centre for Foreign Language Research.
Purpose
The main work of the IFS is the documentation of publications in a literature database with approximately 67,000 entries. They are all counted among the field of foreign language research, especially methodology and didactics of modern foreign language teaching. Several German and international documents are taken up like trade magazines as well as monographs, anthologies, e-journals, educational/teaching material or educational software.[1]
Publications
Since 1970 the “Bibliographie Moderner Fremdsprachenunterricht” has been published four times per year; the first number of each volume includes the most recent research register „Sprachlehrforschung und Sprachunterricht“ containing descriptions of research projects in German-speaking countries. A project intake in the field of foreign language research can be done by those interested until the end of every year.
Furthermore, a deposit library with magazines, monographs and teaching material can be found at the IFS.
Location
The Information Centre for Foreign Language Research is located in the “Mehrzweckgebäude” of the Philipps University of Marburg in the Hans-Meerwein-Straße (Lahnberge).
