Hey TSD, I realized I can only uncheck "Leave a redirect behind" because I am a global rollback. Can I get page mover/extended mover so that I can move pages without redirects where appropriate in accordance with the global rights policy? If I see something such as a box, template, image, etc., on another user/user talk page that catches my eye, I will "borrow" it. More than likely without asking. ;) TheSandDoctor (talk) 04:52, 30 March 2017 (UTC)]] |
Revdel restored.
Was a mistake, now corrected. At first - and a quick glance - it seemed to be disparaging someone. Cheers. -- Alexf(talk) 00:47, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Alexf: Thanks and no problem. Without the context and at a quick glance I can easily see why you made that call. Thanks for fixing it. --TheSandDoctor Talk 00:50, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to [email protected], so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at [email protected].
Thank you!

Changes later this week
- The mobile beta mode will be disabled to have less maintenance. The developers will focus on the desktop improvements project. You can turn on advanced mobile contributions mode if you want to see the categories. You could also jump back to the top. This can instead be done with a gadget or user script. [1]
- Parsoid is software we use for the visual editor, content translation, Flow and the Android app. This has been rewritten. It will come to the wikis gradually over the next two weeks. It has been tested, but there could be some diffs or previews that don't look right. If you see any you can report them. [2]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 November. It will be on the other wikis next week (calendar). This is because of holidays.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 27 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will switch between the article and the talk page in a new way in the mobile view in the future. It will use tabs. This is more like in the desktop view. [3]

SPI soft redirects
Hey TheSandDoctor, thanks for merging the SPI case Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Ranjan Mistry. In the future, I would leave {{SPIarchive notice|newcasename}}
in place at the source page—in this case Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ManishSharma14—because it generates a soft redirect to the new SPI page: you can see it now says, Please note that a case was originally opened under ManishSharma14 (talk · contribs) but has been moved to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Ranjan Mistry.
This is especially useful in order to keep it a blue link when there are inbound links to the old SPI case page on Wikipedia; in this case, I had linked to the old title in the reason field when blocking the socks involved. Thanks, Mz7 (talk) 22:44, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Will do, Mz7! Thanks for reaching out. --TheSandDoctor Talk 16:09, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Ramskq
As part of the wrap-up of Ramskq's SPI I had Draft:Volker Schöffl G5d. It's been recreated by an IP. Could you compare it to the deleted version please? If it's a match, and deserves another G5, then the IP's other creation Nabil F. Saba should probably be considered too. Thanks, Cabayi (talk) 08:59, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Cabayi! The latest creation of Draft:Volker Schöffl is not an exact match but does have the interesting similarity of the first reference (for Awards in infobox) being the same. The awards section is reworded but uses the same plainlist format for a singular entry. That is a strange overlap, but otherwise they appear to be different. I am not sure if G5 is the right choice here (on the fence and tempted both ways), but I can definitely G7 it given that the IP address blanked it after creation. Either way, I do not see a block as being worthwhile due to the dynamic nature of (most) IPs. --TheSandDoctor Talk 23:53, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Cabayi: I G7'd the draft. I have no comment on Nabil F. Saba at the moment though. --TheSandDoctor Talk 23:55, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Talk page access
You might want to consider revoking talk page access: Special:Diff/928581096 --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 16:07, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Drm310, thanks for reaching out. I have gone ahead and (1): converted to a hard block and (2): disabled talk page access per the conduct of the user on their talk page. --TheSandDoctor Talk 23:44, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Additionally, Bureaucrats are permitted to use their discretion when returning administrator rights.
- Following a proposal, the edit filter mailing list has been opened up to users with the Edit Filter Helper right.
- Wikimedia projects can set a default block length for users via MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry. A new page, MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry-ip, allows the setting of a different default block length for IP editors. Neither is currently used. (T219126)

Problems
- The Linter extension helps you find technical errors in articles. It did not show new changes last week. This was because of an API problem. It is now working again. [8]
- Special:Watchlist can show the wrong information again. It does not always show which edits are read and which are unread. This is because of a database problem. The developers are working on solving the problem. [9]

DYK for Sony α7S II
On 19 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sony α7S II, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Sony α7S II captured the first commercial 4K footage in space from the International Space Station? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sony α7S II. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Sony α7S II), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Review newsletter December 2019
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.
Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.
Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.
Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

- Redirect autopatrol
A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.
- Source Guide Discussion
Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.
- This month's refresher course
While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Orphaned non-free image File:2019 Gabriola Piper PA-60-602P crash scene and wreckage.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:2019 Gabriola Piper PA-60-602P crash scene and wreckage.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 03:46, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
