- Nelson Mandela announces the death of his son, Makgatho Mandela, from AIDS – a taboo subject in many African countries.
- An international charitable effort is underway to help the estimated five million victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and its subsequent tsunamis. The death toll now exceeds 155,000.
