- The U.S. Presidential Election, 2004 ends as the last effective challenge to Ohio's electoral vote is defeated by a vote of 267-31 in the House of Representatives and 74-1 in the Senate, and accepted in the Senate at 5:11 pm, Washington time.
- An international charitable effort is underway to help the estimated five million victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and its subsequent tsunamis. The death toll now exceeds 155,000.
- Antauro Humala, leader of the Movimiento Etnocacerista in Peru, surrenders.
- Croatian President Stjepan Mesić receives 49 percent of the votes in the first round of the 2005 presidential election, and will face Jadranka Kosor in the second round on January 16.
