- The U.S. Presidential Election, 2004 ends as the last effective challenge to Ohio's electoral vote is defeated by a vote of 267-31 in the House of Representatives and 74-1 in the Senate, and accepted in the Senate at 5:11 pm, Washington time.
- An international charitable effort is underway to help the estimated five million victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and its subsequent tsunamis. The death toll now exceeds 155,000.
- Antauro Humala, leader of the Movimiento Etnocacerista in Peru, surrenders.
