Zari Tomaz is a fictional character portrayed by Tala Ashe in the CW series Legends of Tomorrow. Loosely inspired by the characters Andrea Thomas and Adrianna Tomaz, both of whom use the moniker Isis, Zari was created by Phil Klemmer and Marc Guggenheim, and introduced in the series' third season.

Fictional character biography

In 2042, Zari Tomaz is a Muslim American hacktivist living in Seattle, which is under martial law imposed by A.R.G.U.S. which has banned metahumans and religion. When Time Bureau agent Gary Green discovers the assassin Kuasa pursuing Zari, he sends a distress signal; the time-travelling Legends of Tomorrow receive it and find Zari, who demands help in rescuing her brother Behrad from an A.R.G.U.S. black site in exchange for finding Kuasa. While Jefferson Jackson initiates an unplanned prison break, Zari reveals Behrad was actually murdered by A.R.G.U.S. and she needed the Legends to help her break into the prison so she could obtain his mystical amulet. She ditches the team by flying away using the amulet. Ray Palmer pursues Zari to her family's camp, but Zari finds it completely destroyed and her family not there. Kuasa attacks them, but is forced to retreat when the Legends intervene. Mick Rory and Amaya Jiwe convince Zari to join the Legends. Amaya explains that Zari's amulet is actually a totem, similar to her own. She offers to teach Zari how to use her powers, and Zari accepts.[1]

When Zari attempts to repair the Waverider (the Legends' timeship), she gets covered in goo and seemingly activates a program that blows up the ship, before seemingly re-experiencing events from earlier that day. The day keeps repeating, with Zari experiencing the same events over and over, learning mysterious secrets about the team. When the ship is next set to explode, Zari seals herself in the study and uses her powers to try and contain the blast. She reappears in an empty Waverider, where she encounters the ship's AI Gideon's human form, who reassures her that she is in the med bay and alive. She tells Zari that she transported her into her program to show her she cannot save 2042 without the Legends. Zari admits to Sara Lance that she was researching historical loop holes to see if she could save Behrad, which Sara reassures her might be possible.[2] To kill the demon Mallus, Zari, Sara, Mick, Amaya, Nate Heywood and Wally West use their totems to create the ultimate warrior: an enlarged Beebo, and succeed. Zari later vacations with the Legends in Aruba, but this is cut short when John Constantine interferes.[3]

In season four, Zari continues operating with the Legends, assisting them on their missions to capture magical creatures called "fugitives", which have been released throughout time.[4][5] She feels sympathy for one named Charlie, who is ultimately spared and imprisoned aboard the Waverider instead of being banished to hell by Constantine.[6] When Constantine uses time travel to avert his lover Desmond's death, the Legends' lives are changed drastically, including Zari who is transformed into a cat.[7] After several failed attempts to fix the timeline result in various other Legends or their allies being killed in increasingly bizarre ways, the restored Zari convinces Constantine to restore the original timeline with Desmond.[8]

When the Time Bureau employee Mona Wu is blamed for a Kaupe named Konane's escape, Nate and Zari realize the footage of Konane's escape has been altered by Nate's father Hank, confirming Mona's innocence.[9] When Sanjay, a fugitive uses the Hindu god Kamadeva's ashes to cause the Waverider crew's sexual desires to manifest in their dreams, Zari dreams of having a threesome with Nate and Sanjay. Mona prevents Zari from marrying Sanjay.[10] Sara sends Zari and Nate on a mission to 1933 without the other Legends, mainly to get them romantically involved. The mission ends with Zari and Nate admitting their love for each other, while an egg they retrieved is revealed as a dragon egg.[11] While Zari and Charlie infiltrate the Time Bureau to save the magical creatures that Neron plans to abuse, the dragon egg, accidentally left in Zari's childhood home, hatches in young Zari's possession.[12] The dragon makes young Zari popular, inspiring the Legends to open Heyworld, the now deceased Hank's magical creature-themed amusement park to botch Neron's plans of painting all magical creatures as monsters. After Neron's defeat, by teaching tolerance, the Legends erase the dystopian 2042 from history, resulting in Zari being replaced by the previously deceased Behrad with only Nate sensing that something has changed.[13]

Reception

Reviewing the episode "Zari" in which the character is introduced, IGN's Jesse Schedeen described Zari as a "pretty generic hacker anti-hero who just happens to have possession of a mystical amulet." He added that "Nothing about her personality or background makes her a particularly compelling addition to the team" and Ashe did not exhibit "the screen presence necessary to stand out alongside the colorful cast of Legends. It's probably a good idea to throw a new wild card into this now-familiar team dynamic, but Zari needs to bring more to the table than she does here."[23] However, The A.V. Club's Oliver Sava reacted more positively, saying, "Tala Ashe is a charismatic actress that sells the emotional moments of this episode's script, and she has strong chemistry with the rest of the group. She's intense, but not overly so, and she recognizes that this series doesn't demand an overly dramatic performance."[24]
